The Ibaadah of The Salaf In The Last Ten Nights of Ramadhaan – Shaykh Usamah al-Utaybi [Audio|Ar-En]

The Ibaadah of The Salaf In The Last Ten Nights of Ramadhaan - Shaykh Usamah al-Utaybi

The Shaykh graduated from the Faculty of Hadeeth at the IslaamicUniversity of Madeenah and studied with many mashaayikh including Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) and Shaykh Rabee’ Ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullah), among others.

On the Authority of ‘Aa’ishah (May Allah be pleased with her) who said:

“When the last ten nights would enter, Allah’s Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would stay up throughout the night, awaken his family, become intense (in worship) and tighten his mi’zar (lower garment).” [Agreed upon]

The Salaf held this great month and more so the last ten nights in high regard and strove to increase in and exert themselves in ‘ibaadah, seeking and hoping for the reward from their Lord. Thus, it is encouraged that we all endeavour to imitate our Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and our Pious Predecessors and strive not only in this month but accustom our souls to the obedience of Allah during the remaining months.

Our Shaykh Usamah al-‘Utaybi (hafidhahullah) will enlighten us regarding the ‘ibaadah of the Salaf in the last ten nights of Ramadhaan and by the Permission of Allah we will all be encouraged to exert ourselves and increase in our acts of worship in the remaining days and nights of this blessed month.

We ask AllahAl-Kareem to make it easy for us to worship Him and that He grants us success in the month ofRamadhaan and steadfastness until we meet Him, Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.

A`ishah  (May Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said,

“There is no emigration after the conquest (of Makkah) but only Jihad [(striving and fighting in the cause of Allah) will continue] and good intention.* So if you are summoned to fight, go forth.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

(*) Intention according to An-Nawawi: It means that goodness which ceased to continue by the cessation of emigration can still be obtained by Jihad and by intending accomplishing good deeds.

Commentary: When a country or a region is regarded as Dar-ul-Islam (land of Islam), it is not necessary to migrate from it to some other place. It is, however, obligatory to emigrate from such regions which are Dar-ul-Kufr (land of infidels) and where it is difficult to adhere to Islamic injunctions. It is also evident from this Hadith that when it is not necessary to migrate from one Islamic country to another then it is also not permitted by the Shari`ah to leave an Islamic country to settle permanently in Dar-ul-Kufr only for the reason that the latter has plenty of wealth and social welfare. Unfortunately, Muslims today are afflicted with this disease. The transfer of their capital and talent to Dar-ul-Kufr is indeed very disturbing because on one side these two factors are lending support to the economy of  Bilad-ul-Kufr (countries of infidels) and on the other, obscenity and indecency that are common in such countries, are becoming increasingly common among the Muslims too.

Another highly important reason for the prohibition of migration of Muslims to Dar-ul-Kufr is that it goes against the spirit as well as their readiness for Jihad fi sabilillah (striving and fighting in the way of Allah). This spirit and readiness must be kept always alive so that the Muslims may respond at once to the call of Jihad whenever the need for it arises anywhere.

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:

Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Nations were displayed before me; one or two prophets would pass by along with a few followers. A prophet would pass by accompanied by nobody. Then a big crowd of people passed in front of me and I asked, Who are they Are they my followers?” It was said, ‘No. It is Moses and his followers It was said to me, ‘Look at the horizon.” Behold! There was a multitude of people filling the horizon. Then it was said to me, ‘Look there and there about the stretching sky! Behold! There was a multitude filling the horizon,’ It was said to me, ‘This is your nation out of whom seventy thousand shall enter Paradise without reckoning.’ “Then the Prophet entered his house without telling his companions who they (the 70,000) were. So the people started talking about the issue and said, “It is we who have believed in Allah and followed His Apostle; therefore those people are either ourselves or our children who are born m the Islamic era, for we were born in the Pre-lslamic Period of Ignorance.” When the Prophet heard of that, he came out and said.

“Those people are those who do not treat themselves with Ruqya, nor do they believe in bad or good omen (from birds etc.) nor do they get themselves branded (Cauterized). but they put their trust (only) in their Lord “

On that ‘Ukasha bin Muhsin said. “Am I one of them, O Allah’s Apostle?’ The Prophet said, “Yes.” Then another person got up and said, “Am I one of them?” The Prophet said, ‘Ukasha has anticipated you.”

The Disbelievers are like Cattle; Rather they are more astray!

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu ‘ala rasulullaah
Amma-ba’d

Shaykh al-‘Utaybi’s Explanation of Allaah’s Statement (which means):
The Disbelievers are like Cattle; Rather they are more astray!

During his lecture “Refraining From The Disobedience of Allaah,” Shaykh Abu ‘Umar al-‘Utaybi (hafidhahullaah Ta’aala) said:

Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta’aala, said about the disbelievers – those who do not believe in Allaah and the Last Day – that they are like cattle:

And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray! They are the heedless ones. (Al-A’raf, ayah 179)

They are like cattle —-> because they don’t learn the commands and prohibitions, and they don’t act upon them.

Rather they are more astray —–> Why are they more astray?

1- The first question is: Why did Allaah make the disbelievers as the cattle?
2- The second question is: Why did Allaah say: بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ (Rather they are more misguided and astray)?

Allaah said the disbelievers are like the animals because they don’t learn Allaah’s Deen, nor do they implement it. Because the animals don’t learn. They don’t read or write or teach (Allaah’s Religion). They only eat and seek their pleasure.

Why are the disbelievers more astray than the animals? ——> Because the animals praise Allaah, whereas the disbelievers do not praise Allaah. The animal doesn’t commit polytheism. As for the disbeliever, he associates partners unto Allaah. For this reason, the disbeliever is more astray than the animal.

So the individual who is intelligent and has an intelligent mind will know why he is created and will work to fulfill that purpose. So whoever is intelligent, he will be successful.

Who is the intelligent?

Why is the intellect named in the Arabic language as ‘Aql?

The ‘Aql is derived from the root word of a rope that is tied.

So when one wants to captivate an animal, you tie it so it doesn’t run away. Because if the animal runs away, it doesn’t know where to find its own benefit, because it could do good or bad. But when you tie the animal, you make the animal only do good. You only use the animal for what is beneficial. So the human being has a brain, and the animal has a brain. But your brain knows what will benefit you and what will harm you. Hence, you do what will benefit you, and abstain from what will harm you.

So the one who ties himself down to do good and imprisons himself away from the prohibitions, he is the one who is ‘aaqil (has intellect). In the Arabic language, the intellect is also called a Hijr. It is a barrier that stands between an individual and evil.

Hence, we see that the person of true intellect is the one who deprives himself from what Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic, prohibited. So the true intellectual who does good and leaves evil, he is the one who is Sa’eed (successful, happy).

So this is the definition of having a true, insightful intellect, the intellect which orders you with good and prohibits you from evil.

It is not intended by intellect that a person knows the details of mathematics or he has knowledge of wordly matters that the believers and disbelievers share in. The intent of ‘aql (intellect) is the benfecial intellect which would help you stay away from entering the Hellfire.

What benefit would it serve a person if had knowledge of business or manufacturing or physics or chemistry, but he worships a cow or a stone or the dead – instead of worshipping Allaah, The Ever-Living Who does not die?

For this reason, Allaah said in the Qur`an regarding the disbelievers and hypocrites that they don’t have knowledge nor do they have the ability to analyze something intellectually.

Even the disobedient Muslim – a Muslim who commits disobedience – needs to rush to repent from his disobedience. Allaah says:

Allaah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allaah will forgive and Allaah is Ever All-Knower, All-Wise. (An-Nisa`, ayah 17) Even the Muslim – when he disobeys Allaah – he is in a state of ignorance when he is disobeying Allaah. And when he does so, his intellect weakens. So when they commit these acts of disobedience, they do not think of these repercussions of these sins…

On following the Proofs and Evidences – Shaykh Usaamah Utaybee [Mp3|Ar-En]

A beneficial lecture given by our sheikh given in Masjid as Sunnah Cranford. The shaikh talks about a few topics but mainly on following the evidences from the Quraan and Sunnah via the understanding of the Salaf.

Ma’an b. ‘Îsâ reports that Imâm Mâlik said,

“I am but a man. I make mistakes sometimes and I am correct sometimes, so examine my opinions and accept anything that agrees with the Book and Sunnah; and leave anything that does not agree with the Book and Sunnah.”

Ibn ‘Abd Al-Barr, Jâmi’ Bayân Al-‘Ilm wa Fadlihi Vol.2 p465.
