Imaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) said:

The proof is His saying, He the Most High:

وهذا هو معنى لا إله إلا الله، وفي الحديثِ : « رأسُ الأمْرِ الإسلامُ وعمودُهُ الصَّلاةُ وذروةُ سنَامِهِ الجهادُ في سبيلِ اللهِ »

And this is the meaning of ‘laa ilaaha ill Allaah’ (none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah).

And in the hadeeth:

“The head of the affair is al-Islaam, and its supporting pillar is the prayer, and its highest part is jihaad in Allaah’s cause.” [1]84

[84] : Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan’s Explanation :

The Shaykh said: “And this is the meaning of laa ilaaha ill Allaah – Meaning: rejection of at Taaghoot and eemaan (true faith) in Allaah.

And Al-Islaam is: To submit to Allaah with tawheed and to yield to Him with obedience and to free oneself from shirk and its people.

This is the head of the affair of the religion; the two testimonies are the head of Islaam and they are the foundation of Islaam. So a person will not enter into Islaam unless he comes with the two testimonies, uttering them and having knowledge of them and acting upon them and holding them as his creed and belief. He will not be a Muslim except with this.

The religion is likened to a body which has a head and a main support and a highest part. So if the head is cut off or if there is no head, then life cannot carry on. Likewise without tawheed, the Religion cannot remain because it is the head which, if it is cut or passes away, then life passes away and the body is destroyed.

And its main supporting pillar which it stands upon is the Prayer. So without its supporting pillar, Islaam will not stand – like a dwelling made of animal hair or a tent – if it has no pillar which it can rest upon, it will not stand. So a house cannot stand except with a support. Then if the support is lost, the house will not stand. Likewise the Prayer – if it is lost, then Islaam will not stand.

Therefore the scholars have said that whoever abandons the Prayer out of laziness, he becomes a disbeliever, in the correct saying – even if he acknowledges its obligation because there is no benefit in acknowledging its obligation if he does not implement it and he does not act upon it, there will be no benefit in that. And therefore the verifiers from the people of knowledge judge that the person who abandons the Prayer deliberately, even if he acknowledges its obligation, is a disbeliever. As for if he denies its obligation, then he is a disbeliever by consensus of the Muslims.

“…and its highest part is jihaad in Allaah’s cause.”

The highest part of the affair – which is the religion  – is jihaad in Allaah’s cause. So jihaad is a proof for the strength of Islaam; when jihaad in Allaah’s cause is found, then that is a proof that Islaam is in a condition of strength because jihaad cannot occur except as a result of strength in eemaan and physical strength.

So the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam mentioned three matters for the Religion: the head, the supporting pillar and the highest part. So without the head, the Religion will not exist at all. So the person who does not establish the head – which is tawheed – will have no religion.

And the person who does not pray, then the Religion will not be established for him even if he bears witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah because it requires a supporting pillar which the Religion can stand upon, and it cannot be found except through the Prayer.

And if jihaad is absent then the strength of Islaam will be absent and it will be an Islaam which is in a condition of weakness and the Muslims will be in a weak state. So there will be no strength for Islaam and the Muslims except through jihaad in Allaah’s cause, He the Mighty and Majestic. So it is a sign of strength and its absence is a sign of weakness.

This is the manner in which the Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam likened these three affairs with regards to the Religion: a head, a main support and a highest part, just as a camel which has a hump, this shows that it is strong. And if it has no hump, then this shows that it is emaciated and weak.

Likewise the Muslims today are in a state of weakness upon the Earth, and therefore there occurs in the hadeeth:

إذا تبايعتم بالعينة ، وأخذتم أذناب البقر، وتركتم الجهاد ، سلط الله عليكم ذلا لا يترعه منكم حتى ترجعوا إلى دينكم

“When you engage in the ‘eenah (usury/riba) transaction and you take hold of the tails of cows and you abandon jihaad, then Allaah will cause humiliation to overcome you; He will not remove it from you until you return to your religion.”

[Hadith Reported by Aboo Daawood (3462) from the hadeeth of ibn ‘Umar radiyallaahu ‘anhumaa and declared Saheeh by al Albaanee]

So abandonment of jihaad is humiliation and weakness for the Muslims and its presence is a proof of strength and formness, just like the hump of an animal.

And Allaah knows best and may Allaah extol our Prophet Muhammad.

And with this, the explanation of the blessed book, the Three Fundamental Principles, is ended.

The souls of the martyrs are within the bellies of green birds in Paradise – Sharh as-Sunnah | Dawud Burbank [Audio|En]

Sharh as-Sunnah : Lesson 44: Point 69
Shaykh Fawzan | Dawud Burbank [Audio|English]

Imaam Barbahaaree rahimahullaah said:

And know that the souls of the martyrs are within the bellies of green birds, which roam freely in Paradise and they return to shelter to lamps beneath the Throne.

And the souls of the wicked and the disbelievers are in the well of Barahoot and are in Sijjeen.

His saying, “And know that the souls of the martyrs are within the bellies of green birds, which roam freely in Paradise,” for the rooh (soul) by means of which a person lives and moves and grasps things by his senses, it is a secret matter from the secrets of Allaah, the Majestic and Most High. No-one knows it except Allaah, meaning no-one knows its true reality except Allaah, the Majestic and Most High.

He, the Most High, said:

وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ ۖ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا

And they ask you about ar-rooh (the soul). Say, the soul is from the private affairs of my Lord and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.(Sooratul-Israa· (17), aayah 85)

1st explanation of aayah: Upon the basis that what is meant by the rooh here is that by which a person lives; a person and an animal and the rest of the things possessing souls.

2nd explanation of aayah: It is otherwise said that what is meant by ar-rooh; a type of the angels and Allaah knows best.[1]

And the rooh in the Arabic language is a term, which is used to refer to that by means of which the possessors of souls will live because al-hayaat (life) is of two categories:

  • Hayaatu-Harakah: (Moving Life) – a life which involves movement; animate life and this occurs with those things possessing souls.
  • Hayaatu-Numoo: (Developing Life) – life that merely involves something growing and growing, this is what occurs in trees and plants.[2]

And from them (types of life) is the life of the embryo in the womb of its mother before the soul is breathed into it. But when the soul is breathed into it then it becomes animate life, the life of movement. As for before that then it is just the rooh (spirit), which is the life of growth.

And the rhetorical theologians and the philosophers are in confusion about the true reality of the soul and they are unable to comprehend it and they stumble and make many mistakes and were unable to comprehend it.[3]

[1] We find the like of that in:

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا

The day when the rooh and the angels will stand in rows.
(Sooratun-Nabaa· (78), aayah 38)

Allaahu A`lam.

[2] Translator’s side point: With regard to different types of life, you can refer to Zaad ul-Ma`aad of Imaam ibn ul-Qayyim volume 5 page 755.

[3] Translator’s side point: Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee rahimahullaah said on this point:

His saying, “You should know that the souls of the martyrs are in the bellies of green birds that roam around freely in Paradise and they return to lamps beneath the Throne,” this occurs within a hadeeth reported by Muslim (1,887) and it is the `aqeedah (creed and belief) of the Ahl ul-Sunnah W`al Jamaa`ah.

As for his saying though that, “the souls of the wicked and the disbelievers are within the well of Barahoot and they are in Sijjeen. Then I say, as for the well of Barahoot then it is a well to the East of `Adan; Aden of this place in Southern Yemen, between it and between Hadhramawt.

And the saying that, “the souls of the wicked and the disbelievers are gathered within it,” there is no authentic proof for this. However, it occurs in a narration whose chain of narration contains a majhool (a person who’s unknown); being reported from `Abdullaah ibn `Amr radiyAllaahu `anhumaa as was mentioned by the one in the footnotes.

Shaykh Ahmad said, “I say what is correct is that which Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, informed of:

كَلَّا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ

The book of the wicked, they (the wicked), their souls will be in Sijjeen. (Sooratul-Mutaffifeen (83), aayah 7)

And the word As-Sijjeen is an intensive form from As-Sijn (restriction) and it is a tight or restricted place and it (Sijjeen) is in the lowest depth of the earth as was said by the People of Knowledge. We ask Allah for safety and security from it, Aameen. And we seek Allaah’s refuge from His anger and from His painful punishment and Allaah grants success.

Shaykh Saalih as-Suhaymee hafizahullaah said in his explanation,

“And likewise, the souls of the believers in general, there occurs in the hadeeth that the soul of the believer will be a bird, which will come and go in Paradise. The souls of the martyrs, it occurs that they will be in the belly of green birds, which come and go in Paradise and the souls of the believers in general, it is established also in the saheeh that they will be birds that come and go in Paradise and this is from the proofs from the bliss of the grave for the soul enjoys bliss just as the body enjoys bliss.

And as for the matter of the souls of the disbelievers that they will be in the well of Barahoot, this is not authentic and it is a well in Hadhramawt. And it occurs in some reports, which are brought by the scholars of Tafseer and perhaps they are reports from the Banu Israa`eel (People of the Book), which we do not affirm and we do not deny but however, nothing is established on this.

The saying of the Prophet sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam:

“The soul of the believer will be a bird, which will eat from the trees of Paradise until Allaah resurrects it returning it to its body on the day when He resurrects it.”

This hadeeth was declared saheeh (authentic) by Shaykh al-Albaaniyy in Saheeh al-Jaami` as-Saheehah no. 995 being reported by Imaam Maalik in his Muwatta, Imaam Ahmad, An-Nasaa`ee, Ibn Maajah and others from a hadeeth of Ka`b ibn Maalik radiyAllaahu `anhu.

Allaah rewards the martyr (shaheed) for his martyrdom – Sharh as-Sunnah | Dawud Burbank [Audio|En]

Sharh as-Sunnah : Lesson 40 : Point 63
Shaykh Fawzan | Dawud Burbank [Audio|English]

Imaam Barbahaaree rahimahullaah said:

And Allaah rewards the martyr (shaheed) for his martyrdom.

[Souncloud Audio Link

Transcribed Audio:

The martyr (ash-shaheed) is the person who is killed on the battlefield whilst fighting against the disbelievers. He fights so that the word of Allaah is uppermost.

Everything of this person will be forgiven by Allaah, except for a debt (ad-dayn) which is upon him because a debt is the right of the people and a right of a person will not fall away unless it is given to him or he pardons with regard to it. But as for the sins which are between the person and Allaah then Allaah will forgive them all on account of a person being martyred in the cause of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic.

And there are also martyrs who are not killed upon the battlefield such as a person who dies through the plague, he is a martyr (shaheed) and one who is killed defending his wealth or his honour or his family then he is a shaheed (martyr) or the person who dies in an unexpected accident such as a fire or by drowning, he is a martyr with Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, meaning he will have the reward of a martyr but he is not the same as the martyr who dies on the battlefield with regard to rulings. Rather, he is washed and shrouded and a funeral prayer is said over him. As for the martyr who dies upon the battlefield then he is not washed and he is not shrouded in any clothes except those he was killed in and funeral prayer is not said over him and he is buried with his blood upon him.[1]

[1] Translator’s side point: When they mention that there are other martyrs besides the martyr who’s killed upon the battlefield, Shaykh Fowzaan mentions examples especially the one who dies through plague, one who is killed defending his wealth or his honour or his family, one who dies in a sudden accident like a fire or drowning.

Al Bukhaariyy reported in his saheeh (653) and Muslim reports it also (1,914) on Aboo Hurayrah radiyAllaahu `anhu who said Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“The martyrs (shuhadaa) are five; the one who dies of the plague and the one who dies of an abdominal complaint and the one who drowns and the one who has a house structure fall upon him and the martyr who is killed fighting in Allaah’s cause.”

And the wording here is that of Al-Bukhaariyy.

And there also occurs from Jaabir ibn al-`Ateeq radiyAllaahu `anhu who said Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

“The martyrs are seven besides the one who is killed in Allaah’s cause; the one who dies of the plague is a martyr and the one who drowns is a martyr and the person who dies from pleurisy is a martyr and the person who dies of an abdominal complaint is a martyr and the one who dies in a fire is a martyr and the one who dies underneath a building falling is a martyr and the woman who dies whilst pregnant is a martyr.”

Reported by Imaam Maalik in his Muwatta, Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad and Aboo Dawood, Ibn Maajah and An-Nasaa`ee and Ibn Hibbaan.

Translator’s side point: Shaykh Al-Albaaniyy said with regard to this narration, “It is saheeh (authentic).”

Imaam An-Nawawi said in his explanation of Muslim:

The scholars said these types of death are shahaadah (martyrdom) on account of Allaah, the Most High bestowing His favour because of their severity and how painful they can be. And there occurs in another hadeeth in the saheeh:

“Whoever is killed defending his wealth then he is a martyr and whoever is killed defending his family then he is a martyr.”

And it’s already been explained in the Book of Eemaan and there occurs in another authentic hadeeth:

“Whoever is killed defending his sword is a martyr.”

Imaam an-Nawawi said that the the scholars said: what is meant by the martyrdom of those people, all of them besides the one who is killed fighting in Allaah’s cause,  is that – in the Hereafter they will receive the reward of the martyrs. As for this world, then they are to be washed and funeral prayer said over them. And there has already preceded in the Book of Eemaan an explanation of that. And the fact that the martyrs are of three categories:

  • Firstly, the martyr who is the martyr with regard to this world and the Hereafter and he is the one who is killed whilst fighting the disbelievers.
  • Secondly, one who is a martyr in the Hereafter but not with regard to the rulings of this life and they are the ones mentioned here – meaning the two hadeeth we just heard, those who are treated as being the martyr in the Hereafter with regard to the rulings in this life, we can treat them as normal people that have died.
  • Thirdly, one who is apparently a martyr in this world but not so in the Hereafter, he is the person who steals something from the Booty or who is killed whilst fleeing.

Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee said on this point,

“I say (with regard to the point that “the martyr is rewarded for his martyrdom, the sick person is rewarded when he is sick”) that occurs in authentic ahaadeeth, which show that a Muslim who falls sick is rewarded during his illness because he knows Allaah caused him to become ill and is the one Who cures. As for martyrdom then it is a very high level, which Allaah gives to whoever He wishes from His servants. However, it cannot be attained except through ikhlaas (making ones deeds purely and sincerely for Allaah) and through mutaaba`ah (following the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam as example). So whoever is killed fighting truly in Allaah’s cause then he is a martyr from the martyrs of this world and the Hereafter if he is killed fighting between the disbelievers and the Muslims. And likewise, one who is killed by the innovators (mubtadi`oon) such as the Khawaarij and their like and that occurs in the hadeeth with regard to the Khawaarij:

“Glad tidings of a tree in Paradise are for those who fight them and they kill him.” [Reported by Aboo Daawood and others.]

As for the martyrs with regard to the Hereafter, then they are many and from the martyrs of the Hereafter are the one who dies through the plague, through a stomach complaint, in a fire, being drowned and a building falling upon him and so on.

The Hajj and fighting Jihaad along with the ruler continue. Jumu’ah Prayer behind faasiq Ruler is allowed – Dawud Burbank [Audio|En]

Sharhu Sunnah : Lesson 25 : Point 27
Shaykh Fawzan | Dawud Burbank [Audio|English]

And the Hajj and fighting jihaad along with the ruler continue. And the Jumu`ah Prayer behind them is allowed; and after it six rak`ahs are prayed, separating each pair of rak`ahs. This was the saying of Ahmad ibn Hanbal.

[Souncloud Audio Link

Transcribed Audio:

The functions carried out by the ruler are many, and the place to find them enumerated and to find them mentioned together, and where you can acquaint yourself with them is the books on the rulings relating to rulership (al-ahkaamus-sultaaniyyah) such as alAhkaamus-Sultaaniyyah of al-Maawardiyy and al-Ahkaamus-Sultaaniyyah of Aboo Ya`laa al-Hanbaliyy and books which have been written on this topic which explain the functions of the ruler. And it is mentioned in the books of fiqh and in the books of `aqaa∙id (creed and belief) also as occurs here.

Firstly (from these functions), is that he (the ruler) is in charge of carrying out the Jumu`ah Prayer and the two `Eed Prayers and the Muslims pray behind him unless he chooses to appoint someone from the Scholars or from the Students of Knowledge to lead the people in Prayer. However, the basic principle is that he (the ruler) has more right to leading the Prayer with regard to the Jumu`ah Prayer (Friday Prayer) and the two `Eed Prayers. So if he appoints someone to do this then he may do so, and this is what action is upon at present.

Secondly, is that he is the one who establishes the Hajj and he leads the people performing Hajj. And he is in charge of them and he looks into any problems they may have.

Thirdly, is establishment of jihaad in Allaah’s cause; this is from the functions carried out by the ruler. He is the one who gives command for it and he is the one who organises the flags and he is the one who chooses the armies and those who are going to fight. And he appoints the commanders and he appoints the squadrons (army units) and he appoints the armies and he provides the fighters with weaponry. And he gives them directions with regard to fighting the enemy and he specifies the direction in which they are to attack.

So jihaad is from the roles of the ruler; and jihaad is not fowdaa (chaos or anarchy) such that everyone who wants to take up arms and go and fight and attack does so and says, “I am fighting jihaad in Allaah’s cause!” This is not jihaad in Allaah’s cause. Jihaad in Allaah’s cause is properly arranged and it is regulated by legislated regulations (of the Sharee`ah, the Islaamic Law). But as for when it is opened up to chaos then it becomes mere destruction, and its harm becomes more than its benefit, if there is actually any benefit in it at all. So the harm resulting from it is greater. So affairs have regulating principles and jihaad is a tremendous affair. It requires that it is correctly regulated and it needs to be restricted by the rulings which are mentioned for jihaad in the Book and the Sunnah and in the speech of the People of Knowledge. The matter is not of fowdaa (chaos or anarchy) such that a person comes from the callers to fitnah (discord) and sets himself up as the leader for those people who are extremists or radicals or ignorant people, those who do not know, he becomes their leader and he says, “We will fight jihaad in Allaah’s cause.” This is counted as being one of the things that cause harm to Islaam and to the Muslims; and this is not jihaad because it is not restricted by the regulating principles which govern jihaad. And if it is not restricted by the regulating principles of jihaad then it just becomes fasaad (corruption) and it is not jihaad. And everything which exceeds its due limits then it turns over and it becomes its opposite. So they now say to those who criticise them, “You are preventing jihaad in Allaah’s cause.”

So we say, “We are not preventing jihaad in Allaah’s cause. However, we say that it is essential that jihaad is regulated by its legislated regulating principles, whereas what you people are doing is fowdaa (chaos) and it is not jihaad and Allaah did not command with it.”

So establishment of the Hajj and fighting jihaad and the Jumu`ah and the `Eed Prayer, these are from the functions of the waleeul-amr (the person in authority).

His saying, “And praying the Jumu`ah Prayer behind them is permissible,” meaning, even if they have fisq (they commit open sins), even if they have acts of disobedience, still the person prays behind them because Prayer behind them retains unity and also a faasiq (an open sinner), if he does something that is good then you do good along with him. And for this reason when they said to `Uthmaan radiyAllaahu `anhu whilst he was being besieged, “So and so leads the people in Prayer and he is not the imaam (the ruler), rather he is just an imaam of fitnah (he is just the leader of discord/tribulation).”

So `Uthmaan radiyAllaahu `anhu said, “O son of my brother, if the people do what is good then do that which is good along with them and if they do something evil then avoid their evil.” [01]

So if he prays then we pray along with him if he is the one in authority, even if he has open sins or acts of disobedience, because of the welfare which lies in doing that. Because the Prayer is worship and the sinful person, faasiq, if he prays then he should be encouraged upon that, supplication made for him. And the Companions they prayed behind rulers who had points against them such as al-Hajjaaj and others. The Companions of Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam prayed behind them in compliance with command of the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam and in order to retain unity.

His saying, “And he should pray after it six rak`ahs.” This is a matter of fiqh; it comes here in accordance with the mention of the Jumu`ah Prayer. So the Jumu`ah Prayer has no raatibah (regular Sunnah Prayer) before it. So whoever comes to the mosque then he should pray whatever is easy for him and then sit and wait (for the imaam to come out). And if he continues praying until the imaam attends then that is more excellent upon the basis that this is unrestricted optional Prayer; it has no connection to the Jumu`ah Prayer itself. As for the raatibah (regular Sunnah Prayer) of the Jumu`ah then it comes after it. Its least amount is two rak`ahs and its greatest amount, in what is famous, is four rak`ahs with two salutations (two salaams). And there comes in one saying (within the Hanbaliyy math.hab) that it is six rak`ahs with three salutations. Therefore, its least amount will be two rak`ahs and its greatest amount is six rak`ahs, or four rak`ahs as is what is famous.

His saying “He separates between each pair of two rak`ahs. This was the saying of Ahmad ibn Hanbal.”[02] Meaning, that does not mean that he prays six rak`ahs altogether with one salaam (salutation at the end of it). Rather six rak`ahs; every two rak`ahs with one salaam (after it); or four rak`ahs with each pair of rak`ahs before the salaam, and this is better. And it’s being ascribed to Imaam Ahmad is because the author (Imaam alBarbahaaree) was a Hanbaliyy (meaning from the students of the students of Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal) and he was well acquainted with the position of Imaam Ahmad. This was a report from Ahmad that it is six rak`ahs. What is famous is that it is four rak`ahs. [03]

[01] Reported by al-Bukhaariyy in his Saheeh (no. 695) from `Ubaydillaah ibn `Adiyy ibn Khiyaar with it (this narration)

[02] There occurs in the Masaa·il of `Abdullaah, son of Imaam Ahmad, that `Abdullaah said, “I asked my father, ‘How many rak`ahs should a man pray after Jumu`ah?’ I said, ‘What is more beloved to you (that he should pray)?’

So he said, ‘If he wishes, he can pray four after the Jumu`ah and if he wishes he can pray six; except that he should give the salutation after each two rak`ahs. That is the saying with regard to all of the (optional) Prayers of the day; all of them are in pairs.’”

Translator’s side point: There are a number of books of the students of Imaam Ahmad that report matters of fiqh from him and there are a number of separate books in that regard. There is the Masaa·il of his son `Abdullaah and Masaa·il of his student Aboo Daawood and Masaa·il of a number of other of his students. Each one is called the Masaa·il of Imaam Ahmad by such and such from his students. This one referred to here is the Masaa·il (The Questions of Fiqh) put to Imaam Ahmad, collected by his son `Abdullaah.

[03] Translator’s side point: In Riyaadus-Saaliheen we had the hadeeth of Ibn `Umar reported by alBukhaariyy and Muslim that the Prophet sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam after the Jumu`ah entered his house and prayed two rak`ahs. Likewise in Saheeh Muslim there’s a hadeeth that Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam said, “When one of you has prayed the Jumu`ah let him pray four after it.”

Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmiyy rahimahullaah mentioned this issue in his explanation and mentioned there are evidences for two and there are evidences of four.

Then he said, “And the six (praying six) is one report from Imaam Ahmad and it was the saying, from the Companions, of `Aliyy ibn Abee Taalib and Aboo Moosaa radiyAllaahu `anhumaa; and from the taabi`een (it was the saying of) `Ataa and Mujaahid (the two great imaams of Makkah from the taabi`een; `Ataa bin Abee Rabaah and Mujaahid ibn Jabr) and of Humayd ibn `Abdir-Rahmaan and it was the saying of Sufyaan ath-Thowree, great imaam.

Shaykh Ahmad preferred the saying, as is the view of Shaykhul-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah, that what is preferred in his view is: if a person prays it in his house he prays two rak`ahs and if he prays it in the mosque he prays four. (He said,) “That is more established with regard to the evidence behind it.”

Eastern and Western Cultural invasion on Muslim societies – Imam Ibn Baz

How to fight the Eastern and Western cultural invasion [1]

All praise be to Allah Alone, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and Companions.

There is no doubt that the gravest danger that Muslim societies are facing nowadays is the so-called cultural invasion with its different weapons, including all media means, printed and broadcast alike. Invaders have realized in the modern age that the old ways have become ineffective. Nations fight courageously to defend their religion, homelands and their heritage. Usurping by violence and terrorism is an inherently refused concept, especially in modern times after the spread of awareness among the people. The world has become like a small village and many organizations were established to defend the rights of nations, refuse political invasion, and claim the right to self-determination. Every nation has the right to have sovereignty over its own territory, invest its resources, and rule its territories according to its own standards. Nations also adopt different beliefs, creeds and ruling systems, which made invaders leave these countries after fierce, bloody wars.

However, before leaving those countries, the invaders thought of many ways and prepared many plots based on thorough investigation, full awareness of the aims and effectiveness of those plans, and the ways that should be followed to accomplish them. Their aims revolved around designing highly deceiving curriculums of weak ties with religion, focusing on spreading their culture and instilling in the souls of most of the people the admiration of their material achievements in different aspects of life. When people, especially teenagers and young students, are impressed by this superficial brilliant achievements and inventions in the world, some of them who are totally impressed choose to complete their education in European and American universities. There they are surrounded with doubts and sorts of lusts systematically presented by orientalists and atheists, using well-organized, perverted, cunning schemes, where they face the Western lifestyle with all its corruption, dissolution and obscenity.

Rarely does a person remain safe from these weapons, being accompanied with enticement and lack of religion or authority. After completing their study and returning to their countries, those people assume important posts and become agents for the colonialists and apply their demands and implement their plots precisely, even with harsher means than those used by the colonialists themselves. This has taken place, indeed, in many countries that were occupied by invaders. The way to safety from this danger lies in establishing universities and institutes in different specializations, in order to limit the missions abroad and teach all forms of knowledge in all universities and institutes. This should be accompanied with paying attention to Islamic subjects and culture, in order to keep the `Aqidah (creed) of the students intact, and protect their morals and future, so that they take part in building their society on a Shari`ah (Islamic law) basis and according to the needs of the Islamic Ummah (nation). We should restrict educational missions abroad to certain forms of knowledge that are not available at home.

May Allah guide us to all what benefits the people and the countries, and protects the Muslims against anything that might harm them in their `Aqidah and morals. He is the Most Generous.

Moreover, we need to take more care of curricula, add a perfect Islamic touch to them, and establish more scientific institutions to help the people study at home instead of traveling abroad. We should also choose teachers and managers perfectly; all of them should be of good morals, sound `Aqidah, reputation, jealousy on Islam, power and honesty. Whoever enjoys these traits is guaranteed and will most probably do their best to explain information to the students in a correct way.

However, if it is a necessity to send some students to learn abroad due to the lack of some professional institutions, especially in the field of industry, an objective committee should be formed to choose the most suitable students in terms of religion and morals and who are well-versed in Islamic culture and have an Islamic spirit. The committee can also choose a knowledgeable, righteous supervisor, who is active in practicing Da`wah (calling to Islam), to accompany the mission, practices Da`wah there, supervises and guides the students, and refutes any doubts they may come across.

They should be given even a short course before traveling to be aware of all the problems they might encounter abroad, and clarify the Shari`ah viewpoint and wisdom behind such issues according to the Qur’an, the Sunnah (whatever is reported from the Prophet), and the opinions of scholars. This includes, for instance, the rulings on slavery, polygyny in general, polygyny of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in particular, Talaq (divorce pronounced by a husband), the wisdom behind both offensive and defensive Jihad (fighting in the Cause of Allah), and such doubts that are mentioned by the enemies of Allah to Muslim youths, so that they would be fully ready to refute any such issues.

As for facing the invasion of print and broadcast media, which have afflicted the Muslim Ummah in the modern age and have come to occupy most of the time of Muslims in spite of the deadly poison and the misleading promotion they usually contain, it is one of the most important tasks to protect Islam and the Islamic culture from its evil plotting. We should make sure that the Du`ah (callers to Islam) dedicate themselves to writing useful researches, periodicals and articles; practicing Da`wah, replying to different forms of cultural invasion and exposing their falsehood. The enemies have dedicated all their resources and potentials, founded many organizations and applied different means to deceive Muslims. Their misconceptions should be refuted and Islamic `Aqidah, legislation, rulings and morals should be clarified and explained in a nice, attractive way using suitable modern ways; wisdom and good discourse of preaching, arguing in a gentle way via all mass media as much as possible. Islam is the perfect religion that encompasses all goodness, guarantees happiness to all people, good progress, sound development, peace, security, prosperous life and winning in this world and in the Hereafter.

The Muslims are afflicted by all this as they do not stick to their religion as they should have, with most of the people not understanding its reality, because of being not interested; ignorant of it; negligent of many scholars in clarifying its advantages, wisdoms and secrets; lack of honesty and patience in inviting others to it; and not bearing harm and using the modern ways. Thus, discrepancy took place. Most of the people have become ignorant of the Islamic rulings. They have become deluded.

It is known that the last generation of this Ummah will not succeed except with what brought success to the first generation – that is, to follow the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

Allah (Exalted be He) says:

[Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) to these idolaters (pagan Arabs) of your folk:] Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qur’ân and Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah), and follow not any Auliyâ’ (protectors and helpers who order you to associate partners in worship with Allâh), besides Him (Allâh). Little do you remember! [Surah Al-A`raf, 7: 3]

Allah (Exalted be He) also says:

“And verily, this (i.e. Allâh’s Commandments mentioned in the above two Verses 151 and 152) is My Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path. This He has ordained for you that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – see V.2:2).” [Surah Al-An`am, 6: 153]

And: And this is a blessed Book (the Qur’ân) which We have sent down, so follow it and fear Allâh (i.e. do not disobey His Orders), that you may receive mercy (i.e. be saved from the torment of Hell). [Surah Al-An`am, 6: 155]

Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He), Who is the Most Truthful, has promised us a great victory and successful outcome in return for this in His Statement: …and (as for) the believers, it was incumbent upon Us to help (them). [Surah AlRum, 30: 47]

He (Glorified be He) also says:

But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqûn [the pious – See V.2:2], not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allâh surrounds all that they do. [Surah Al-`Imran, 3: 120]

And: Allâh has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islâm). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieves after this, they are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).[Surah Al-Nur, 24: 55]

And: O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allâh, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.[Surah Muhammad, 47: 7]

There are many Ayahs (Qur’anic verses) in this regard. When the Salaf (righteous predecessors) applied these noble Ayahs, whether in words, actions, or beliefs, Allah granted them victory over their enemies, made them rulers of the world, spread justice through them, and made them leaders of the Ummah and Imams of guidance. When the latter generations faltered in this (Allah’s Orders) their conditions declined, according to Allah’s Statement: Verily, Allâh will not change the (good) condition of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allâh).[Surah Al-Ra`d, 13: 11]

May Allah make the Muslims, whether people or governments, return to their faith in a proper way; grant them comprehension of it, cause them to apply it, make them unanimous on Al-Haqq (the Truth), guide them to cooperation in righteousness and piety, and enjoining each other to Al-Haqq and persevering upon it. He is the All-Hearing, Ever Near. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions.

Advice to the Youth concerning Palestine – Shaikh ‘Ubaid Al-Jaabiree

This was a three part question asked over Paltalk. The first two questions were about du’aa and and so they were left out and consequently the tape recording was edited and abridged to pertinent part only. The recording is not clear in some parts, which we have highlighted in the text with […].

Question: The youth would like your advice O Shaikh, on what our obligation is with regard to what is occurring currently in Palestine. May Allaah reward you! As-Salaam ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.

Answer: Wa ‘Alaika as-Salaam wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh…

As for your third question, which is on directing the youth, or advising the youth concerning what is occurring in Palestine, then (we say that) Allaah knows that our hearts have become broken (over the current situation). However, we do not let our passions overtake us, rather we let the Sunnah direct us. And the Sunnah in this regard is to return the matter to those people who are capable of producing solutions and conclusions (Ahlul Halli wal-‘Aqd) – the leaders and rulers.

So it is not permissible for every Tom, Dick and Harry to speak his mind, because this falls into provoking and instigating turmoil.

Firstly, I will mention the legislated principle that has been stated in the Noble Qur’aan, which is: “And when a matter concerning (public) fear or security comes to them, they spread it (out to the people). But if they had only returned it back to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those who derive (the correct understanding) among them would have made (the matter) known (upon its correct understanding).” [Surah An-Nisaa: 83]

Secondly, I warn the Muslim youth, specifically, and all the Muslims, generally, to not oppose this principle by instead accepting the call of these foolish speakers, who send messages asking for certain things which they have no right over, such as boycotting the purchase of American products, for example. Or they send letters over the commercial lines or by fax saying: “Give your support, Give your support!”…

So these people are assuming a responsibility that they have no authority over. And furthermore, we, all praise be to Allaah, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and in the Gulf states and other neighboring states, as well as the Arab lands, are being ruled by Muslims from among us. We do not claim that they are infallible or that they are free from error. However, they are Muslims and there are scholars around them. And they have advisors from the scholars, judges, ministers, and those who have experience in law and politics.

So it is not permissible to follow other than them, the command is solely for them…

And I advise you to seek refuge in Allaah, by making supplication (for them) – that He alleviate their suffering and relieve them from their distress. And ask that He solve their dilemma and grant them victory over the Jews in the state of the Tribe of Isra’eel, as well as those who join sides with them, from the disbelievers and polytheists. This is the advice in brief and Allaah knows best.

We love Jihad and wish for it, but this is not Jihad! This is destruction! – Shaykh Fawzan

Scholar: ´Allâmah Sâlih bin Fawzân al-Fawzân

Translation & video: aFatwa com (site no more exists)

Shaykh al-Fawzân: We love Jihâd and wish for it, but this is not Jihâd! We have said that this is not Jihâd. This is destruction! Is it Jihâd to kill people without due right? He even kills himself without due right. Is this Jihâd? This is not Jihâd. Jihâd has rulings, conditions and rules. It is the Muslim ruler who leads and calls to it.

Even the israelites said to their prophet:

“Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah” (2:246)

They didn’t go armed to fight on their own:

“Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah” (2:246)

I.e. a leader. Who did they ask it from? One of their prophets, the ruler.

Jihâd, which is one of the disposals of the ruler, is referred to the ruler. He is the one who orders it and takes on it. He is the one who recruits armies and prepares weapons. Allâh said:

“… by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy…” (8:60)

He did not say you should terrify the Muslims and those one has a treaty with. He said:

“… by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy…” (8:60)

“Our Brothers Die Everywhere, don’t Obey the Rulers in this” – Answered by Shaykh Salih Fawzan

Question: There are those who incite the youths and say that our brothers are dying everywhere. They call in the name of Jihâd and that one shouldn’t obey the ruler in this (I.e. in Jihâd). Can you say something regarding this matter?

Shaykh al-Fawzân: Shall we then also kill our own children, tear our homes apart and kill the Muslims if our brothers die everywhere? They rejoice in this. They rejoice in getting our brothers into these countries. They rejoice over these homicide-attacks in our countries. Is this Jihâd? Does this affect our enemies? It only affects us. It only affects the Muslims.

In the lecture titled: The Danger of ISIS upon the Muslim Ummah – 11-03-1436 – Riyadh – Shaykh Muhammad bin Ramzaan al-Haajiree

The Shaykh (حفظه الله تعالى) told us a story of a young man.  He was a person who was involved in sinning.

He said: Normally when a person lives a life like this as soon as be becomes religious, if he lived previously in sin he wants to find the shortest or quickest path to Paradise.  And this individual arrived and sat in their localities.  He was their in their gatherings for 14 day.  One of the big players from them approached him and said:  ‘Ma shaa Allah, Allah has chosen you for a mission to go and blow yourself up.’

This individual said: ‘What?’

The big player said: ‘We’ll put an explosive vest and you will go in the midst of these people and blow yourself up killing the kuffar and the apostates.’

The Shaykh (حفظه الله تعالى) said:  They make takfeer for everything!

This individual said:  ‘I want Jihaad, I want to fight. I shoot them they shoot me, back and forth, we trade fire, this is what I want.  Blowing myself up…’

The response of the big player was:  ‘Allah has chosen you to be a martyr for shahadah (martyrdom)!’

This individual said: ‘I just came, 14 days.’  He then asked the big player:  ‘How long have you been in Jihaad for?’

The response of the big player was:  ‘I have been in Jihaad for 14 years, when the Americans first came in to Iraaq…’

This individual said: ’14 years and Allah hasn’t chosen you and 14 days and Allah has chosen me…’

When the leader saw the response of this young man in front of everybody. He said: ‘OK, the affair goes back to you, but we are going to consult amongst us and we will give you the final answer at Maghrib time.’

This individual he recants after he escaped from them.  He knew that the Maghrib time meant that they were going to kill him at Maghrib time.  They would say that you have apostated from Islam and kill him like this. Simple as that!

The Shaykh (حفظه الله تعالى) said:  ‘Cold blooded murder!’

The Shaykh (حفظه الله تعالى) said: ‘This young man saw them previously saw that they did this to some of the young men there.’

This individual said:  ‘I’m dead either way.  If I waited till Maghrib I’m dead. If I die on the way trying to escape, either way I am going to die!’

So he found an individual who knew somebody that he knew and this individual understood his circumstances and made easy for him an escape route.

The Shaykh (حفظه الله تعالى) said:  ‘And of course he had no paperwork, because when he came he came as a mujahid wanting Paradise so he ripped up all of his paperwork.  Once he reached the border with Turkey, there were individuals who came from the Saudi Embassy and spoke to this individual and now he is being advised…’

Those Who Commit Suicide in the Name of “Jihad” are Actually Followers of Satan – Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan

Those Who Commit Suicide in the Name of “Jihad” are Actually Followers of Satan
املنتحرون باسم اجلهاد أتباع للشيطان :Original Title
Author: Ṣāliḥ Ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān
Translated by: Abu az-Zubayr Harrison –

The great scholar, Dr. Ṣāliḥ Ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān, a member of Saudi Arabia’s council of senior scholars and the Permanent Committee of scholars, describes those who claim they are performing “Jihad” for the sake of Allah by committing suicide are actually fighting for the sake of Satan.

Those people who fall into this type of corruption never sought the council of any Islamic scholars, never learned anything from them. Instead, they isolate themselves from mainstream Muslims and privately accompany people who act as the worst “human idols.” Such people then began brain washing individuals until they eventually harbor enmity towards the public and thus carry out these types of attacks. They consider Muslims to be disbelievers, they murder them, blow up buildings indiscriminately killing both the young and old, male and female, Muslims and those non-Muslims guaranteed safety and living peacefully under Muslim laws (in Muslim nations) – all because of this corrupt ideology.

This is the end result of all those who turn to wicked people for guidance and to the very callers and propagators that the messenger ( مّوسل عليه اهلل ىّصل ) told of when he was asked about certain trials and tribulations that will occur toward the end of time; he said:

» دُعَاةٌ عَلَى أَبْوَابِ جَهَنَّمَ مَنْ أَطَاعَهُم قَذَفُوْهُ فِيْهَا «

Callers at the doors to Hell; whoever obeys them, they will cast him into it (Hell). [2]

This is exactly the state of affairs now and it only confirms this statement of the messenger (.مّوسل عليه اهلل ىّصل ). When such people align themselves with callers to misguidance, those callers lead others into it (misguidance or Hell). Everyone condemns them and hates their actions – both non-Muslims and believers. And no one supports their actions except those like them and those on the same methodology. This issue (of suicide attacks) is certainly a great tribulation and evil, and it is crucial that Muslims carefully understand the issue and not rush to act. Anyone (confused about the issue) should ask the people of religious knowledge to clarify the correct position and then ask Allah for guidance. People should not simply trust others with regards to this issue without knowing the reality of such propagators and whether they are established upon truth or not even though they may outwardly show good conduct, religious fervor, and honor for Islam.

As for everyone who outwardly shows good and truth yet is religiously ignorant, we must not hasten to him and give him our trust and reliance until we know the reality of him, his character, and his behavior. This only happens due to giving such a person the benefit of the doubt yet without really looking into his affairs or asking the people of knowledge, intellect, and good advice. As a result, these groups are formed because of people simply hastening to act and because of religious ignorance and mixing with evil people, trusting in them, relying on them and staying away from the mainstream Muslims and their scholars.

Such people (suicide bombers) are always those who avoid religious lessons and the scholars so they naturally fall into these types of things. Similarly, they usually isolate themselves from their families and homes.

So, it is incumbent especially on the Muslim youth to take a lesson from such people, for the successful people are those who learn lessons from the actions of others. We must learn from these incidents that we have to stick to our religious limits and stick to the main body of Muslims and their leader and not split off from them and turn to others (for guidance).

[2] Recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. The full text of the ḥadīth is as follows:

Ḥudhayfah Ibn al-Yamān said: People used to ask Allah’s messenger about good things, but I used to ask him about bad circumstances fearing that I may fall into them. So I said, “Oh messenger of Allah, we used to live in evil during the times before Islam then Allah brought us this good (Islam), so will there be more evil times after these good times?” He ( مّوسل عليه اهلل ىّصل ) replied, “Yes.” I further asked, “And will there then come good after that evil?” He answered, “Yes, but it will be tainted.” I asked, “Why will it be tainted?” He said:

» قَوْمٌ يَهْدُوْنَ بِغَيْرِ هَديي، تَعْرِفُ مِنْهُم وَتُنْكِرُ «

There will be people who will guide with other than my guidance. You will recognize some things from them and reject other things.

I asked, “And will there be after that good even more evil?” He replied:
» نَعَم، دُعَاةٌ عَلَى أَبْوَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، مَنْ أَجَابَهُم إِلَيْهَا قَذَفُوْهُ فِيْهَا «

Yes, there will be callers at the doors of Hell; whoever answers their call, they will cast him into it (Hell).

I then said, “Oh messenger of Allah, describe them for us.” He said:
» هُمْ مِنْ جِلْدَتِنَا وَيَتَكَلَّمُوْنَ بَأَلْسِنَتِنَا «

They will be from our skin (Arab) and speak our tongue (language). I asked, “So what do you instruct me to do if I reach those times?” He said:

» تَلْزِمُ جَمَاعَةَ املُسْلِمِيْنَ وَإِمَامَهُم «

Stick with the mainstream group of Muslims and their leader.

“What if there is no main group and no leader?” The prophet ( مّوسل عليه اهلل ىّصل ) then said:

» فَاعَتَزِلْ تِلْكَ الفِرَقَ كُلَّهَا وَلَوْ أَنْ تَعُضًّ بِأْصِلِ شَجَرَةٍ حَتَّى يُدْرِكُكَ املَوْتُ وَأَنْتَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ «

Stay away from all of those sects even if you have to bite onto the root of a tree and remain in that state until death comes to you.
