Note: at 5:14 it should say “..and then Allaah cured him through this way.”
Translated by Yasin Abu Ibrahim.

Questioner:
A man has been afflicted by Waswaas Qahree (compulsive whisperings). So what is your advice? May Allaah preserve you.
Shaykh Sulaymaan bin Saleemullaah ar-Ruhaylee:
It is a way from the ways of Iblees (Shaytaan). And the principle regarding Waswaas is that it is a proof for the righteousness of the servant and the soundness of the heart. For verily, when Shaytaan sees that the servant is righteous and that he (Shaytaan) is not able to defeat him by way of actions, he starts whispering to him. This is why when this (affair of Waswaas) was mentioned to the Prophet -sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam– he said: “All praise is due to Allaah Who has reduced the plot of Shaytaan to al-Waswasah (whispering).” He (Shaytaan) wasn’t able to overcome us, so he came to us with Waswaas. And he (the Prophet) said: “That is a clear sign of faith.” This is the essence of Waswaas. Meaning: if Waswaas takes place, then that is a proof for this.
But this doesn’t mean that we praise those who are afflicted by Waswaas. For verily, answering to Waswaas is evil. It is obligatory to avoid and stay away from it. And those who are afflicted by Waswaas are of two categories.
The first category: that the Waswaas does not overpower him. Rather it comes to him and goes away. This is cured through making a lot of isti’aadhah (seeking refuge with Allaah). He seeks refuge with Allaah from it and he spits to his left side. And he recites the Qur’aan and the Ahaadeeth.
The second category: that the Waswaas is so much that it overpowers him. And this cannot be cured by any action, because the more actions he does, the more his Waswaas increases. Even if he recites Qur’aan, his Waswaas increases! So how is it cured? The Fuqahaa’ say that it is cured by completely turning away from it. What does this mean? It means that you do not perform anything because of it or leave off anything because of it. Even if it comes to you, consider it a crazy person speaking from behind you, while you are certain that he does not harm you. And do not perform anything because of it or leave off anything because of it.
Some people, when Waswaas comes to them, they open the Qur’aan to recite it. Then Iblees becomes (even more) eager in (overpowering) him, so he starts whispering to him with regards to the Qur’aan. He gets up and prays, so he (Shaytaan) whispers to him in his prayer.
And do not leave off anything because of it! If you are reading the Qur’aan and Shaytaan comes to you whispering, then do NOT leave off reciting the Qur’aan, rather continue! Leave it whenever YOU want to leave it. As for leaving it because of the Waswaas, then don’t. If you do this and you are patient… KNOW that this issue requires patience, because Iblees comes to the person who is afflicted with Waswaas in the form of an advisor, someone who has pity. In the prayer (Shaytaan says): “This is the prayer! And the prayer is the connection between the servant and his Lord! And if your prayer is nullified, then what remains for you? Beware! Leave (the prayer) and go perform Wudoo!” (He does this) in order to corrupt his prayer. And he is not an advisor, rather he is Iblees! So this requires patience. Be patient!
If Waswaas comes to you in Wudoo, then perform your Wudoo and leave. If Iblees then comes to you and says: “There remains something!” Then say: “There remains nothing.” Do not pay attention to him! And go pray! By Allaah, it will not harm you! By Allaah, it will not harm you. You are reciting the Qur’aan and Iblees comes to you whispering? Continue! And leave him (Iblees)! Continue reciting! By Allaah, it will not harm you! In fact, you will be rewarded! Because you are performing Jihaad against Iblees. Then Iblees will becomes hopeless of you and leave this door (of Waswaas), and he will start looking for another door.
So, O brothers, the likes of this brother about whom it is said that he has Waswaas Qahree, meaning: the Waswaas overpowers him, the ONLY cure for him is completely turning away. And the meaning of completely turning away, is that he has CERTAINTY that it does not harm him, and that Allaah is Ever-Merciful, and that it is not possible that Allaah punishes his servants because of this, and that this isn’t from the religion! Allaah says: “And He has not laid upon you in religion any hardship…” (22:78) How can it be from the religion that a person has to perform Wudoo seventy times?! [unclear] So you should know this and be certain of it, and that’s it! You do what the people do, and you turn away. And you continue in your act and you don’t leave it because of Waswaas. And do not perform anything because of Waswaas. By Allaah, with the permission of Allaah he will be cured. And we know this by experience.
By Allaah, O brothers. A man came to me and Shaytaan used to always whisper to him with regards to his wife, that he is divorcing her. And if he goes with her to her family, and he says to her: “Go to your family,” then Iblees comes to him and says: “You just divorced her.” Sometimes he used to call me at two o’clock at night and three o’clock at night and say: “O Shaykh, right now she is next to me in bed, is she my wife or have I divorced her?” In the beginning we said to him: “Keep yourself busy with the remembrance of Allaah, until you leave this affair.” So he started keeping himself busy with the remembrance of Allaah, and then Iblees started coming to him; whenever he said “Subhaanallaah”, then Iblees said: “No! You are indirectly saying you have divorced her.” And whenever he said “Allaahu akbar”, then Iblees said: “You are indirectly saying you have divorced her! And this is a matter of honor!” When we saw that the affair became severe, we advised him to turn away (from this Waswaas). Then he used to turn away for a while and then return (to his state of Waswaas). He sometimes came to my house, and I used to throw him out of my house. Because as long as he knows that there is someone who can give him comfort, then he will continue with his Waswaas. But we gave him the principle. After a while, and to Allaah belongs all praise and blessing, his life became stable and this Waswaas was completely gone from him, because he was firm upon this principle. And I know many people, one of them had Waswaas for more than twenty years! And he came to us, so we advised him and we were patient with him for a while, and then Allaah cured through this way. So my advice to the brother is that he acts upon what I have mentioned, and Allaah knows best.

The second point of reflection is a reminder. Last year, O servants of Allah, Ramadhaan came upon us and we exerted ourselves a little and were negligent in many ways. We were lazy in many ways and were surprised when Ramadhaan ended and we bade it farewell. We were regretful of our negligence therein and promised ourselves that if we make it to the next Ramadhaan, we would exert ourselves in worship and that we would not be negligent or lazy.
Here we are, O servants of Allah, we have begun Ramadan and days from it have passed us by. So what have we done regarding our promises? Have we been generous with ourselves by exerting ourselves in these blessed days or have we returned to what we were upon before; exerting ourselves a little and being negligent a lot? It is incumbent, O servants of Allah, to remember our condition last Ramadan so that we can improve our condition in this current Ramadan as it is only a minute number of days, O servants of Allah, before it ends.
Thus, it is obligatory upon us to honor ourselves by exerting ourselves in acts obedience as anyone of us does not know if he will or will not make it to the next Ramadan. How many of our loved ones fasted with us last Ramadan, but today they are lost amongst us and have entered their graves. Allah knows best about our situation. Therefore, we need to make the most of this Ramadan doing righteous deeds as in this lies our happiness in this life and the next.

Translated by Abu Afnaan Muhammad Abdullah حفظه الله
Shaykh Sulaymaan Ar- Ruhaylee حفظه الله:
The first point of reflection: Is a point of contemplation and this point – O servants of Allah- is that last year we welcomed Ramadhaan and then bade it farewell. Then, we waited for the next Ramadhaan and saw it as being far away. Yet. here it is upon us and one of us says to himself or his brother. ‘How fast the days have past. I swear by Allah it was as if it was yesterday we bade farewell to the last Ramadhaan and here it is today we begin the current Ramadhaan.’
Verily this is the reality of the days, they quickly pass us by and our appointed times have diminished. One of us says – O servants of Allah- if the year passes by, My age has increased a year’ but the reality of the affair is that certainly his age has decreased by a year as one’s age is limited and one’s appointed time is limited. And verily the reality of the affair is that it is not but steps (closer to death) and Allah knows best when those steps will end. Verily, O servants of Allah, it is but just days which we spend and they spend us as they quickly move us to our appointed time.
Verily, this reality – O servants of Allah – reminds us of the statement of Our Lord the Most High:
And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything. [Al-Kahf: 45]
Verily this life – O servants of Allah – quickly passes us by, it quickly passes us by and our condition is not except three: Youth, then old age and then death. (Like the line of poetry says):
‘The last thing an individual is called is ‘old man ‘ and what follows that from the names he is given is ‘the deceased’.
So glad tidings – O servants of Allah- for the one who reflects upon that which has passed and revived the present and what will come with righteous actions.

Question:
What is your advice for those who have been tried with looking at pornographic photos and movies? Especially with the presence of many kinds of media which are available to everyone.
Shaykh Sulaymaan bin Saleemullaah ar-Ruhaylee:
O Allaah! O my Lord! O Ever Living! O One who sustains and protects all that exists! O Originator of the heavens and the earth! O Allaah! Cure his heart, O Lord of all that exists! O Allaah, turn him away from this calamity, O Lord of all that exists!
My advice to myself and to my brothers, is that we should know that the eye is a blessing from Allaah. It is from the greatest blessings of Allaah upon us! A blessing that reoccurs in every moment! So we should use it to obey Allaah and we shouldn’t use it to disobey Allaah. And we have to know that the one who uses the blessings of Allaah to disobey Him, then he is on the verge of it not being a blessing anymore, even if it stays.
And the second affair, is that we should remind ourselves that we will be asked about this eye in front of Allaah, the Exalted and Most High. When you sit in your room while there is no one (with you), and you look (to these images), then remember that you will stand in front of Allaah and He will ask you about this eye and these things you were looking at.
“There is no one among you except that his Lord will speak to him without any interpreter between them. He will look to his right and will not see anything except that which he sent forth. And he will look to his left and will not see anything except that which he sent forth. Then he will look in front of him and will not see anything except Hellfire.”
So let him remember this!
And the third affair, is that he should remember that Allaah is with him; that Allaah sees him, hears him and knows everything about him! So Allaah is (constantly) with him with His Hearing, His Seeing and His Knowledge. So when you are by yourself and you are watching these movies and disgusting things, then remember that Allaah sees you right now and that Allaah knows about your situation! So do not say, “I am by myself,” but remind yourself that Allaah sees you.
It has been mentioned that one of the Salaf used to differentiate between one of his students and the rest (of his students). So the students asked him about this, and then he wanted to clarify to the students why he differentiates. He gave each student a bird and said, “Slaughter it where nobody sees you.” So the students went and returned the next day, and all of them had slaughtered their bird except this one student. He said to this student, “O so-and-so, what have you done?” He answered, “I went there and there and there…” So he said, “And why have you not fulfilled my command?” He answered, “Every time I went to a place, I knew that Allaah is seeing me. So I couldn’t find a place where nobody sees me.” So he said, “Because of this, I love him. {Verily, the most honourable of you with Allaah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwaa.} (49:13)”
So we should remember this and that Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, sees us. Then, O my brother, time is short and it passes with obedience and disobedience. By Allaah, time doesn’t stop with an obedient person, nor with a disobedient person. Remind yourself that if you are patient during these minutes, then it will pass without any sin. And that if you perform this sin, then it will pass with the sin and it will result in corruption in your heart, it will make your life difficult and it will cause wretchedness for you. And perhaps you will be prevented from a blessing because of this.
So remind yourself with this, and then remember that the eye will testify against you. The eye will testify against you with that which it has seen, in front of Allaah, the Exalted and Most High. So fear Allaah, the Exalted and Most High, and honour the greatness of Allaah. And if you do this, then you will be aided against Iblees, with the might and power of Allaah.
With the advice to perform a lot of du’aa (supplications). O brothers, whoever has been tried with a sin, then let him humble himself before Allaah in the last part of the night (saying), “O Allaah! Forgive me! O Lord, You are Most Knowledgeable about my situation! O Lord, I have been tried with this disease, so make me hate it, O Allaah! O Allaah, separate me from it as You have separated the East from the West!”
Humbling oneself and truthfully turning to Allaah is from the greatest means which lead to the rectification of your situation. So, O my brother… And this question of you indicates good and indicates that you want good and that you want to get rid (of this evil). Pray at night, for the arrows of the night do not miss their target. And humble yourself before Allaah while you are prostrating (saying), “O my Lord, O my Lord, O my Lord! Forgive me and save me from this calamity! O my Lord, make me hate it! O my Lord, separate me from it as You have separated the East from the West!” And Allaah is All-Hearing, Responsive. He is Near to His servants, He does not reject a truthful servant. And He feels Shy to reject the supplication of his truthful servant.
So turn to Allaah, the Exalted and Most High. And Allaah, the Most High, knows best.
