How to Overpower One’s Own Soul to Do Good – Shaykh ʿAlī al-Ḥaddādī حفظه الله

Shaykh ʿAlī ibn Yaḥyá al-Ḥaddādī said:
[The question] says: “How can I fight my [own] soul in [making myself] love acts of obedience, seeking knowledge, learning knowledge, and praying in congregation?”
How do you fight against your soul…. This means you compel it. Compel your soul. Your soul says, “No, don’t attend the lesson.” Tell it: “Rather, I will attend the lesson.” Start your car and head off to the lesson.
This is the solution.
You hear the call [to the prayer] while your soul is feeling sluggish, loving sleep. Tell it: “No, there’s no [more] sleep; there’s prayer.” Get up, perform ablution, and walk to the mosque.
Once, twice, three times, it’s over. [Your soul] will become compliant. Your soul will become compliant and give in to you.
But if you pamper it—every time it tells you, “Don’t do it,” you say, “Hearing and obeying”—it will overpower you. You will not be able to direct it.
So then the issue, after Allāh gives one true success and [one] puts [his] trust in Allāh, is one of your overpowering your soul and compelling it, and it will become compliant for you after one, two or three times, if Allāh wills.

[40] Question: What is the best way for women to give da’wah?
Answer: I say to the women: “Remain in your homes.” [Surah Ahzaab: 33]
And you should not concern yourselves with da’wah. I reject the use of the word “da’wah” amongst the male youth by them making it seem like they are from the people of da’wah – as if the word da’wah has become the fashion of modern times. So every individual that knows something about the Religion becomes a Da’ee (caller to Islaam)! And this matter did not stop with the male youth until it was carried over to the female youth and housewives. And in many instances, they have begun to turn away from fulfilling the obligations of their households and their husbands and their children, turning away from these obligations towards something that is not obligatory upon them, such as establishing the da’wah.
The general rule concerning the woman is that she is to stay in her home. And it has not been legislated for her to leave it unless she has a dire need. This is based on the statement of the Prophet, sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: “And (praying in) their homes is better for them”, i.e. than the (congregational) prayer in the masjid.”
Today we see a prevalent phenomenon amongst the women in that they go out often to the masjids in order to pray the congregational prayer, not to mention the Jumu’ah prayer. In spite of this, their homes are better for them – unless there is a masjid in which the Imaam is a scholar who teaches those attending some aspects from the sciences of the Religion. So in this case, the woman could go out to pray in the masjid in order to listen to the knowledge. There is nothing preventing her from that. As for the woman preoccupying herself with the da’wah (!), then let her sit in her home and read from the books that her husband or brother or other male relatives provide for her.
Furthermore, there is nothing preventing her from setting a day in which she calls the women to come to her house or she goes out to attend the house of one of them. That is better than a group of women going out (to her). One woman going out to a group of women is better for them than all of them going out to her. As for her moving about and traveling, perhaps traveling without a mahram, and she justifies that by claiming that she went out for the purpose of da’wah, then these are from the presentday innovations. And I do not specify the women only with that, rather, even some of the male youth speak excessively about the da’wah and yet they have very little knowledge.

Disobeying the Rulers & Abandoning the Scholars – Abdul-Aziz ali-Shaykh [PDF]
AUTHOR: Imaam Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaanee
TRANSLATED: Al-Ibaanah Book Publishing
PRODUCED BY: Al-Ibaanah.com
About the Book:
This is a translated transcription of a lecture delivered by Imaam Al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah) that was recorded and distributed under the title “Hadhihi Da’watunaa” (This is Our Call). The present translation was translated directly from the Arabic audio.
In this lecture, Imaam Al-Albaanee explains the basis of the Salafee Manhaj, which is following the way, understanding and practical application of the Salaf, who were namely the first three generations of Muslims: The Sahaabah, Taabi’een and Atbaa’ at-Taabi’een. They are the ones referred to in the Prophet’s saying: “The best of mankind is my generation, then those that come after them, then those that come after them.”
This is the basis that distinguishes the true call to Islaam from all other false and erroneous calls, regardless if they claim to be “upon the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.” Al-Albaanee goes into depth discussing this fact, that one cannot truly understand and apply the Qur’aan and Sunnah unless he follows the understanding and application of the Salaf. We ask Allaah to accept this effort and benefit the Muslims with it.
Quotes from the Book:
“So here we have given the answer from the ayah and the two hadeeth, we just mentioned. Follow the way of the Believers! The way of those believers from present times? The answer is no, we mean the Believers from the past – the first era – the era of the Companions – the Salaf As-Saalih (pious predecessors). These are the people whom we should take as our example and as the ones whom we follow. And there is absolutely no one equal to them on the face of the earth. Therefore, the essence of our call is based on three pillars – on the (1) Qur’aan, the (2) Sunnah and (3) Following the Salaf As-Saalih (pious predecessors).”
“So everyone claims to follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and how often have we heard this kind of talk from the youth who are in confusion, when they say: ‘Ya akhee, these people claim to follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and those people claim to follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.’ So what is the clear and decisive distinction? It is the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and the Methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih. So whoever follows the Qur’aan and the Sunnah without following the Salaf As-Saalih, he in fact has not followed the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, rather he has only followed his intellect, if not his desire.”
“After making clear this important condition of “upon the methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih”, I must give you some examples. In the past, the Muslims split up into many sects. You hear about the Mu’tazilah, you hear about the Murji’ah, you hear about the Khawaarij, you hear about the Zaidiyyah, not to mention the Shi’a and the Raafidah and so on. There is no one amongst these groups, no matter how deep in misguidance they are, that does not share the same saying as the rest of the Muslims, which is that: “We are on the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.” No one amongst them says: “We don’t follow the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.” And if one of them were to say that, he would completely leave the fold of Islaam. So then why did they split up so long as all of them rely on the Qur’aan and the Sunnah – and I bear witness that they do rely on the Qur’aan and the Sunnah for support. But how is this relying done? It is done without relying on the third foundation, which is what the Salaf As-Saalih were upon.”

Question to Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan:
Could you give some advice to the young Muslims, including students of knowledge, who watch World Cup matches late into a third of the night; and in the month of Ramadan matches will be played during the time of Isha and Tarawih prayers?
His response:
Muslims must leave diversion and play, and turn to the worship of Allah ‘azza wa jall, and not waste their time following matches or other types of diversion and play, especially in the blessed month of Ramadan.
It is upon Muslims in general, and the youth in particular – because some of them are very fond of football matches and watching them; and this has no benefit, rather it has harms because it involves wasting time. How can a person waste his precious time and waste this great season of Ramadan watching matches? This is a great loss which cannot be replaced. So they must stop this and turn to the worship of Allah, especially during the month of Ramadan. A person should make good use of his precious time by spending it in the obedience of Allah and standing in prayer for Allah at night. This is what he has been told to do, and this is what will remain for the people and this is what they will find kept for them with Allah ‘azza wa jall as reward in the Hereafter.
