At-Tawassul (Seeking nearness to Allaah) and it’s Types – By: Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan

Question:

The questioner asks O shaykh regarding at-tawassul ( a means of seeking nearness to Allaah with certain actions), it’s types and that is with the supplication of the righteous.

Answer:

At-tawassul is of two types; the type that is legislated (allowed) and the type that is forbidden.

The tawassul which is legislated is

  1. tawassul to Allaah by (using) His Names and Qualities or
  2. tawassul by way of righteous actions or
  3. tawassul in requesting supplication from a living person (who) is present, that he supplicates for you regarding your affairs; All this is permissible.

The tawassul which is forbidden is

  1. the tawassul done by the honor the creation, or by his right or by his personality or his uprightness.

This is the tawaasul which is forbidden. If the one who does so directs anything from worship to the one the tawaasul is made towards, then this is major shirk, just as that which the people of jaahiliyah were upon ( Allaah says) “they worship other than Allaah things that will not harm nor benefit them, they say these are our intercessors with Allaah” (10:18) (also) Just as most of the grave worshippers are upon; those who seek nearness (to Allaah) by way of the deceased with different forms of worship and they say “these will intercede for us with Allaah” and this is major shirk!

Beautification in Prayer – By: Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan

BEAUTIFICATION IN PRAYER
By: Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzan

Question:

May Allaah treat you well. The questioner says: the imam of the masjid possesses a lot of wealth, but when he comes to the prayer; he wears a dirty Izaar (bottom waist wrap) and a dirty garment. When I say to him why doesn’t he purchase new garments for the prayer; he says whoever is humble for Allaah then he will raise him, so what is the ruling of his prayer?

Answer:

This is not humbleness to Allaah. Allaah says;

“O children of Adam, take your adornment within every masjid…” (7:31)

Meaning in every prayer, and the adornment here does not only mean covering the private area, but the adornment comprises of clothing used for beautification for the prayer; while facing the Lord of everything that exist. You are standing in front of Him, so you beautify yourself with whatever you are able to from beautification in appreciation for the prayer and glorification of the position between yourself and your Lord.

This is something required and as mentioned in the Hadeeth:

“if Allaah expands His favors upon, then display them”

And the prophet said:

“Verily Allaah loves that the signs of His favors are seen upon His servants”

This is not from humility, yes; you should not wear extravagant boasting clothing, so you become someone who is looked at. You should wear moderate clothing which are clean and beautiful, as the prophet صلى عليه و سلم said:

“Verily Allaah is beautiful and He loves beauty”

What is the ruling if i see someone committing a sin and i do not advise him – Shaykh Abdul Azeez Aali Shaykh

Question:

What is the ruling if I see someone committing a sin and I do not advise him under the pretense that he already knows the ruling?

Answer:

Man commits sins while he knows, but this is from the ignorance of man. Certainly ignorance is that which overcomes his heart the moment he practices or does actions of disobedience; then he forgets the punishment and threat of Allaah.

Allaah the most High says,

“The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance”(4:17)

He described them with ignorance even if they were people who possessed knowledge. But the moment they began practicing evil and fell into it; the ignorance over took their hearts, and man (then) forgets about the greatness of Allaah and the completeness of His knowledge; Allaah’s acquaintance of him, and that Allaah sees him and knows his secrets. This one becomes neglectful of all of these affairs. So there is a must to give him advice, and warn him regarding the anger of Allaah; so that you establish that which is obligatory upon you in calling to Allaah.

As the prophet ملسو هيلع للها ىلص said:

“if one of you sees an evil then let him change with hand, and if he is not able then with his tongue, and if able to; then in his heart that is the weakest of faith”

Advice for the youth in the begin stages of uprightness – By: Shaykh Abdul Aziz Aali Shaykh

ADVICE FOR THE YOUTH IN THE BEGIN STAGES OF UPRIGHTNESS

By: Shaykh Abdul Aziz Aali Shaykh

Question:

Asalaamu alaikum may Allaah treat you well and the muslim benefit from your knowledge; the questioner asks: for the youth that are in the being stage of uprightness (upon the truth); what do you advise him with? And how does he know the people who are upon the sound Manhaj from those who are upon an evil Manhaj?

Answer:

I advise him with the fear of Allaah and the praising of Allaah for saving him from misguidance and going astray and guided him to the straight path. (Also) let him search for the scholars who are adhering to the legislation (of Islam); and let him read their books and be diligent in gaining understanding of the religion of Allaah.

Let him distance himself from those who don’t have ability to be apparent in front of the people; And their followers are only hidden and concealed. Certainly these are the things that diverts from the upright inclination. These people desire that their evil affairs be concealed; so let him distant himself from these people. Let him search for a scholar that possesses taqwa; and he will give him insight and direct him.

He should read much of the Quran, Sunnah and the books of creed.

I ask Allaah that He prepares him for the possession of knowledge and that he is taken by his hand to what’s good.

The evidence that points to the obligation of covering the face for the woman – Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan

Question:

May Allaah keep you firm. We hope from you clarification of the evidence that points to the obligation of covering the face for the woman.

Answer:

The evidence is from Quran and Sunnah (Allaah says)

And when you ask for something, ask them from behind a hijaab.”(33:53)

And the hijaab is that which conceals the women from a cloth, a wall or a door.

Allaah says;

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be harmed…” (33:59)

So in the hijaab is prevention from the harm of evil doers (from) what they desire from her. If she covers then the evil doers and hypocrites will have no desire for her. But if she removes (it) then the evil doers and hypocrites will desire what she has.

Ibn Abbas was asked about the meaning of the verse, “to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments” (33:59) He then took the area of his garment and placed it over his face; clarifying that this is the meaning of it (covering the face).

Aaisha (may Allaah be pleased with her) said “when we were with the Messenger of Allaah in the state of ihram (during hajj); when men would pass by us we would put our khimar down over our heads and faces and when the men would proceed by us we would remove it. All this was in the presence of the prophet س لم و ع ل يه صل and he approved of that.

The hijaab my brothers Allaah mentioned regarding it two benefits;

  • The first benefit: that it is purification for the heart (as Allaah says) “That is more pure for your hearts and for theirs” (33:53) And what single male or female Muslim does not want a pure heart?!
  • The second benefit: it prevents the harm of the hypocrites and evil doers and (their) enjoyment of her. So when she (properly) wears hijaab they are not able to see her face; therefore finding pleasure in her. (Allaah says) “That is more suitable that they will be known” (33:59) Meaning they will be known for chastity “and not be harmed” (33:59) (Meaning) their desires for her will be cut (off), but if they see her revealing and uncovered; they will desire her and harm her.

Q/A on the topic of Eid, with Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

الشيخ صالح بن فوزان الفوزان

Question:

Respected Shaykh, may Allah give you success: on the days following Eid, some people organize gatherings for women where the simple hand drum (al-duff) is used and there is dancing and singing. [The women] say these are the days of Eid and it is allowed to use al-duff, dance and sing without using [other] musical instruments; how correct is this?

Answer:

Brother, the day of Eid is one day, not a number of days. The days of Eid Al-Ad-ha and Eid Al-Fitr are a one day for each. The Days of Tashriq that follow the day of Eid Al-Ad-ha are not days of Eid, they are not called Days of Eid; these are the Days of Tashriq. These people [being asked about] want to revive drums, musical instruments and singing, they call them the Days of Eid. This is a lie about the Shariah; this behaviour is not allowed not for men and not for women.

Question:

May Allahs benevolence be upon you, respected Shaykh, the enquirer asks: In the tape shops there are tapes where there are recordings of al-duff being played accompanied by young women / teenage girls saying nashids. Teenage girls and women listen to these tapes on Eid with the excuse that al-duff is allowed on the Day of Eid. What is the ruling on this?

Answer:

The ruling is that this is not allowed. This [activity] teaches young women false frivolity and singing it spoils young Muslim women and makes them become silly. Accordingly, these tapes must be destroyed, they must be destroyed. Singing on Eid was not allowed by the Prophet Allahs praise and peace be upon him except for young girls; minors who were not legally liable for their actions. [They were] young girls, not females who were legally bound by Islamic law (i.e. those who had reached puberty). Women who are grown up and legally bound by the commandments of Islam are not permitted to sing or behave frivolously.

Question:

May Allahs benevolence be upon you, respected Shaykh, this enquirer asks about a practice that has emerged in the mosques/places of prayer on Eid: the distribution of dates before Eid prayer, so that people can get the virtue (of practicing the Sunnah) of eating some dates [before Eid Al-Fitr prayer]. Is this action a Sunnah, or is it a novel introduction?

Answer:

This is the practice of some young Muslims Allah guide them. This was not done amongst the Salaf; we do not know that they used to distribute dates at the Eid prayer place (musalla). What is confirmed from Allahs Messenger praise and peace of Allah be upon him is that he used to eat before leaving home [on Eid Al-Fitr], he would eat a few dates before leaving his house. So, whoever wants to practice the Sunnah should eat when he leaves his house not at the mosque or prayer place.

Audio link (Arabic):
http://www.alfawzan.ws/AlFawzan/sound…

Question:

Respected Shaykh, what is the ruling on giving presents at Eid?

Answer:

There is no harm in this. Spending more and giving more food, drink, gifts and visiting others, all of this is desired, because it involves keeping in touch with Muslims and brings about love between them. So, there is no harm in [giving gifts].

‘Therefore it is necessary for the son to seek forgiveness for his parents.’ [From ‘Sunnan Ibn Majah’ No. 3660]

Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan was asked:

‘My mother seeks forgiveness and makes Tasbeeh a hundred times a day for her parents daily, what is the ruling of seeking forgiveness for parents after they have passed away?

The Shaykh answered:

‘This is a good thing, seeking forgiveness for parents and the Muslims, a person seeks forgiveness for himself, his parents and the Muslims, this is a matter which is legislated.

– Seek forgiveness for your sins and the believing men and women. – Like Allaah said to our Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.

Seeking forgiveness for a person, his parents, his relatives, and his Muslim brothers, the living and the dead, is a matter which is needed, and a person should do this a lot.’ [Taken from: http://www.alfawzan.af.org.sa/node/13605%5D

The Real Meaning of Zuhd (Not having a love for the Dunyaa) – Shaykh al-Uthaymeen

Published by Miraath Publications
Listen to Audio Excerpt @ : Day 29: The Real Meaning of Zuhd (Not having a love for the Dunyaa)

a) AbdurRahmaan bin Ali bin Muhammad Ibn Jawzi (d. 598 A.H.) said:

‘Zuhd is not just leaving wealth or giving wealth to show that you are generous and strong, nor to get people’s hearts to incline to you, on the contrary Zuhd is leaving worldly things due to having the knowledge that it is insignificant in relation to the immeasurable value of the Hereafter.’

[Taken from: ‘Mukhtasir Minhaj al-Qasideen’ p.324]

b) Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘The intent of Zuhd is not rejection of having possessions, since in fact Sulayman and Dawood –alayhim as-Salaam- were the ones who had the most Zuhd from amongst the people at their time and they had been endowed with wealth, land and women.

Our Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- had definitely the most Zuhd above all mankind, and he had nine women. ‘Ali bin Abi Taalib, AbdurRahman bin ‘Awf, Zubayr and Uthmaan -Radi Allaahu anhum- were from those who had Zuhd even though they had wealth, and there were many others like them.’

[Taken from ‘Madarij as-Salikeen’ by Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751 A.H.) Volume 2/13-14)]

c) Al-Hasan said:

‘Having Zuhd of the Dunyaa is not prohibiting oneself from that which is Halaal, nor by wasting money, but it is knowing that what is in Allaah’s Hand is more trustworthy than one’s own-self and what he has in his hand (i.e. possesses).’

[Taken from ‘Madarij as-Salikeen’ by Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751 A.H.) 285]

d) Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (d.795) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘Abu Sulayman said: ‘Do not testify for anyone that he has Zuhd, since indeed Zuhd is in the heart.’

No One Lives for Eternity – By Shaykh AbdulMuhsin bin Hamd al-Abaad al-Badr

Listen to Audio Excerpt @ : Miraath Publications – BiteSize Ramadhaan 1434 Articles – Day 30

Allaah Ta’ala said:

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا لِبَشَرٖ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ ٱلۡخُلۡدَۖ أَفَإِيْن مِّتَّ فَهُمُ ٱلۡخَٰلِدُونَ ٣٤

– And We granted not to any human being immortality before you (O Muhammad), then if you die, would they live forever? – [Anbiyya: 34]

Shaykh AbdulMuhsin said:

‘The Noble Ayaah indicates that the passage of a human is to pass away, and that Allaah did not make it such that anyone could live for eternity before the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, so eternity is not for the Prophet or for anyone else to remain. But rather everyone is moving towards passing away as Allaah Ta’ala said:

كُلُّ مَنۡ عَلَيۡهَا فَانٖ ٢٦ وَيَبۡقَىٰ وَجۡهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ ٢٧

Whatsoever is on it (the earth) will perish. And the Face of your Lord full of Majesty and Honour will abide forever.  [Rahman: 26-27]

Some of the people of knowledge said: ‘The Mushrikoon used to reject his -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – Prophet hood, and they would say: ‘Muhammad is a poet we await for him some calamity after some time, and perhaps he will die just like such and such poet died from such and such tribe. So Allaah Ta’ala mentioned that indeed Prophets before you died, and Allaah has power over His religion with victory and protection, this is how the Deen and Sharia of the Prophet is protected.’

With this Ayaah, it indicates that al-Khidr has indeed died, whether he was a Wali (friend of Allaah Azza wa Jal), or a Prophet, or Messenger, because he was a human being, and he was present at the time of Moosa –alayhim as-Salaam. And Allaah Azza wa Jal had indeed said:

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا لِبَشَرٖ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ ٱلۡخُلۡدَۖ

– And We granted not to any human being immortality before you (O Muhammad) –

[From ‘Min Kanooz Qur’aan’ by Shaykh AbdulMuhsin p.118]

Preserving Good Deeds from Envy – Ibn Taymeeyah

Preserving Good Deeds from Envy
By Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d.728) -Rahimullaah-
Compiled & Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

Published by Miraath Publications

Listen Audio Excerpt @ : Miraath Publications – BiteSize Ramadhaan 1434 Articles – Day 22

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah -Rahimullaah- mentions in his explanation of the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

ادعوا ربَّكم تضرُّعًا وخُفيةً إنه لايحبُّ المعتدين…

Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. [al-Aaraaf: 55]

there are ten benefits of hiding your Dua’, and from amongst these benefits he said:

‘Indeed the greatest of blessings is turning to Allaah and worshipping Him. Every blessing has the equivalent of it being envied by an envious person, whether openly or secretly. There is no greater blessing than of turning to Allaah and worshipping Him [making Dua’], indeed the souls of the envious are attached to that blessing.

There is nothing more secure for the person who is envied than hiding his blessing from the envious person. Indeed Yaqoob said to Yusuf -alayhi as-Sallam:

قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ لاَ تَقْصُصْ رُؤْيَاكَ عَلَى إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُواْ لَكَ كَيْدًا

< < O my son! Relate not your vision to your brothers, lest they arrange a plot against you > >

till the end of the Ayaah.

How many of the people who have hearts, a connection and status with Allaah Ta’ala may perhaps have spoken about it, and informed people about it, and the envious one tried to plunder him over these blessings.

This is why the righteous and elderly are advised to keep their secrets with Allaah Ta’ala, and not to allow anyone to be acquainted with them.
This issue of hiding the blessing is of great benefit, its people know is benefits. Therefore, if it is commanded to do so in your Dua’/supplications, then this also includes the Dua’ for requesting this, and the Dua’ of praising Allaah.

Living and turning to Allaah Ta’ala is from the great treasures which has a right to be hidden from the eyes of the envious.’

Dividing the Qayyam al-Layl (Night Prayer) in the Last Ten nights of Ramadhaan – Compiled & Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

Published by Miraath Publications

Audio Excerpt: Miraath Publications – BiteSize Ramadhaan 1434 Articles – Day 19

1 – Abu Dawood as-Sijistani (d. 275 A.H.) said:

‘Imam Ahmad was asked while I was listening: Should the Qayyam – meaning the Taraweeh prayer – be delayed to the last part of the night?

He -Rahimullaah- answered:

‘No, the Sunnah of the Muslims is more beloved to me.’ [From: Masa’il Abee Dawood’ p.90]

2 – Al-Marwazi quotes from Imraan bin Haydar -Rahimullaah-:

I sent a question to al-Hasan -Rahimullaah- and I asked him about the Isha prayer in Ramadan, should we pray it then return to our homes and sleep then return to the Masjid after wards?

He rejected that and said:

‘No, Salatul- Isha then the Qayaam.’ [From ‘Qayyam al-Layl’ by al-Marwazi]

3 – Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d.728 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘…and Taraweeh prayer is a Sunnah after the Isha prayer.’ [From: ‘Mukhtasir al-Fatawa’ by Baali p.81]

And he also said:

‘The Sunnah of the Taraweeh prayer is that it is prayed after the end of the Isha prayer, as is agreed upon by the Salaf and the Imams.’ [From: ‘Majmoo Fatawa’ 23/119]

4 – Shaykh Muhammad Nasir- Deen Al-Albaani (d.1420A.H) -Rahimullaah- was asked:

Questioner: ‘In the last ten nights of Ramadan, they divide up the prayer, the night prayer at the first part of the night, and the last part of the night, and this has become a continuous practice.’

The Shaykh: ‘Bida’.

Questioner: ‘How would it be then if we wanted to establish the Sunnah and make it easy for the people?’

The Shaykh: ‘They presume the like of what Umar had said, that those who delay the prayer are better. Meaning that Umar ordered Ubayy bin Ka’ab to establish the night prayer with the people after the Isha prayer, so he did so, and when Umar went out he said: ‘ This is a blessed Bida’ and those who sleep instead of it are better.’

The questioner: ‘So you mean that the situation of the night prayer is the same as it was before the last ten nights?’

The Shaykh: ‘Yes.’ [From: ‘Silsilah al-Huda wa Noor’ Tape no. 719]

5 – Shaykh Salih bin Fawzan bin Abdullaah al-Fawzan said:

‘As for the Salat-ul-Taraweehya; then this is a stressed Sunnah, and it is done straight after the Isha prayer and the optional prayers after the Isha prayer. This is what was the practice of the Muslims.

As for delaying it, as the questioner mentions, to another time, then coming to the Masjid and praying at-Taraweehya, then this is in contrast to what was practiced. The scholars of Fiqh mention that it is done after the Isha prayer and it is the optional prayers after the Isha prayer.

So if they delay it, then we do not say it is Haraam, however, it is in opposition to that which was practiced. Taraweehya is prayed in the beginning of the night, this is what was the practice.’

[Must Read] Two Days and Two Nights like no others

It is reported that Anas b. Mâlik – Allâh be pleased with him – said:

There are two days and two nights the likes of which no one has ever heard of before:

the Day on which you will receive the news about Allâh the Exalted: whether you will receive His punishment or His mercy,

the Day you will be given your book (of deeds): either in your right hand or your left,

that [first] night you will spend alone in your grave, a night like no other you have spent, and

that night on the morning of which will be the Day of Resurrection, after which there will be no more night.

The so-called Salat Al-Fatih – The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta

Q 5: The Al-Tijaniyyah sect has their own supplication called Salat Al-Fatih, which they consider to be better than reciting the Qur’an. Is this true? Moreover, on Friday before Maghrib (Sunset) Salah and after Subh (Dawn) Salah, they circle around a piece of cloth on which, they claim, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Ahmad Al-Tijany sit. During such times they recite the supplication called Salat Al-Fatih. Please, provide evidence and clarify if this practice is proper.

A: All their claims are false. Moreover, their deeds are null and void and are considered to be Bid’ahs (rejected innovation in religion).

For more clarification, I will cite the so-called Salat-ul-Fatih (Remembrance from the Tijaniyyah order). The following is cited in the Simplified Encyclopedia of Contemporary Religions, Doctrines, and Parties – The World Assembly Of Muslim Youths: “Their leader, Ahmad Al-Tijany, claims that he physically met the Prophet, peace be upon him, talked with him, and learned Salat-ul-Fatih from him- The wording of this Salat reads: “O Lord, have peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad, the opener of the closed, the last of the prophets, the supporter of right with right, and the guide to Your straight path, his family as high as his standing and rank.” They have beliefs concerning this Salah, including:The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, told him that the reward for reciting it once is equivalent to that of reciting the Qur’an six times.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, told him once again that the reward for reciting this Salah once is six thousand times as much as that for every Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah), Du`a’ (supplication), long or short, and the recitation of the Qur’an (Jawahir Al-Ma`any Wa Bulugh Al-Amany, vol. 1, p. 136)

The reward for such Salah is gained only if the reciter is authorized to recite it. This means there should be a chain of authorization tracing back to Ahmad Al-Tijany who, according to him, received this Salah from the Messenger of Allah.

Allegedly being the words of Allah (Exalted be He), this Salah is deemed to be a Hadith Qudsy (Revelation from Allah in the Prophet’s words) (Al-Durrah Al-Faridah, vol. 4, p. 128).

– He who recites Salat-ul-Fatih ten times will gain a reward that even an `Arif (Sufi who has reached a high station of worship) who had lived for one million years would not get if he had not recited it.

– He who recites this Salah even once will have his sins forgiven and will have a reward as much as that for six thousand Tasbihs (saying: “Subhan Allah [Glory be to Allah]”), Du`a’s (supplication), and Dhikrs. (See Mushtaha Al-Kharif Al-Jani, pp. 127, 299 and 300.

I say that the following verse applies to the above: “Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ to purchase with it a little price!” The Committee elaborated on this sect in the previous Fatwas.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

The Guidance of the Companions With Regards To The People Of Innovation – Shaykh Muhammad Ramzaan

A beautiful and comprehensive explanation delivered by Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Ramzaan al-Haajiree (May Allah Preserve Him) expounding on the guidance of the Companions in dealing with the people of innovation. Herein the Shaykh presents some lofty benefits and salient points of contemplation from the hadith of Ibn Mas’ood and the people in dhikr circles, thus clarifying the approach of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah regarding the people of innovation.

This treatise was translated and compiled by Abu Afnaan Muhammad ‘Abdullah (May Allah Preserve him) with the explicit permission and approval of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Ramzaan al-Haajiree.

An excerpt taken from the chapter: The Person of Innovation in The Religion is Not Granted The Success To Repent

“Can a person of bid’ah come back? (The answer is) he sees himself as being upon the truth and the correct position, and believes that he is getting closer to Allah by practicing these forms of bid’ah. For this reason, the person of bid’ah is not granted success to make repentance. Why is this? This is because he does not consider himself as being wrong in the first place, unlike the person who engages in sins. Because the latter, even while he is engaging in sins or acts of disobedience, he knows within himself that he is doing something wrong, he wants to make repentance. However, the person who is upon bid’ah believes that he is doing a righteous action (bringing him closer to Allah), so how can he make repentance?”

Knowledge and Actions – By Shaykh Rabia’ ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee

1 – Shaykh Rabia’ said:

‘Learning knowledge should be for the sake of Allaah’s Face, and also for acting upon that knowledge, otherwise knowledge will have an evil consequence, so the person remains between two illnesses, either the illness of ignorance or the illness of knowledge which is not beneficial, but rather harmful.

The knowledge which Muhammad -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- came with is in itself beneficial. However, if a person does not act upon it then it becomes an evil consequence for him, and harmful for him, and perhaps it could harm others.’

2 – Shaykh Rabia’ said:

‘What is required from learning knowledge, is acting upon it, and action cannot come except after knowledge. As Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala said:

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

-So know that Lâ ilâha ill-Allaah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah), and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.-  [Muhammad: 19]

Bukhari wrote a chapter heading ‘Chapter: Knowledge comes before Statements and Actions because it is obligatory upon us not to act except with knowledge, and not worship Allaah except with knowledge, so we do not worship Allaah Subhanahu – with ignorance or following desires.’

3 – Shaykh Rabia’ said:

‘The way of those misguided from the people of the Book who learnt knowledge but did not act upon it, is that their hearts became hard, and most of them became evil…. . .

If this hardness afflicts the heart then it destroys it. . . . .

So it does not accept the truth, and does not act with knowledge and refuge is sought with Allaah, and it leads to hiding knowledge and acting in opposition to knowledge. . .. .

It leads to following whims and rejection of the truth, which is clear like the sun. . . . . ’

Only Performing one Umrah in one Journey – Compiled and translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

Audio Excerpt: Miraath Publications – BiteSize Ramadhaan 1434 Articles – Day 12

Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘The Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- would not perform an extra Umrah exiting out of Makkah, after already having performed one, as many of the people do nowadays. Rather all the Umrahs that the Messenger performed were upon entering Makkah.

He -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- lived in Makkah for thirteen years after the revelation had first descended, and it is not reported from the outset about him that he performed Umrah exiting from Makkah in that time period.

So, the Umrah that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- performed and legislated, is the Umrah of entering into Makkah, there is no Umrah for the person who is in Makkah and he goes outside the boundary of Makkah whereby he can enter again and perform Umrah. This was not ever done by anyone at the time of the Prophet, except by ‘Aeysha alone out of all those who were with her. This was because she had made the intention and entered into Ihram but had begun her menstrual cycle. So the Prophet ordered her to connect up her Umrah with the Hajj, and informed her that her Tawaf of the House and going between Safa and Marwa, would indeed be sufficient for her Hajj and Umrah together (instead of performing a separate Umrah).

So she found that her female companions were returning with a Hajj and a separate Umrah, since they had intended to perform Hajj at-Tamattu (with an Umrah and a Hajj), and they had not begun their menstrual cycle and did not have to combine their Umrah in with the Hajj. However, she would have only returned with an Umrah within her Hajj, so he -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- ordered her brother to take her to perform an Umrah from at-Tan’eem, to soothe her heart, and her brother did not perform an Umrah from Tan’eem in that Hajj nor did anyone else from those who were with him.’

[Taken from: ‘Zad al-Ma’ad’ 1/94]

Muhammad Nasir- Deen Al-Albaani (d.1420A.H) -Rahimullaah- was asked:

‘Is it permissible for me to perform Umrah twice in one journey, since I am from Jordan. The first one from Abyaar Ali (the local name for the Meeqat Dhul Hulayfah just outside Madina), and the second from at-Tan’eem (outskirts of Makkah), just like ‘Aeysha -Radhi Allaahu anha. If this is not permissible, then can I perform it for my deceased father or mother? May Allah reward you with goodness.

The Shaykh answered:

‘The person who wants to repeat an Umrah then it is necessary for him to return to the Meeqat from whence he entered into Ihraam, whether that is for his own self or for his parents.
As for entering into Ihraam from at-Tan’eem, from whence the Noble lady ‘Aeysha entered into Ihraam, then this ruling is specific for ‘Aeysha and those who are in a similar condition to her.

I term this Umrah from at-Tan’eem as the Umrah of the menstruating woman. The reason for this is because when ‘Aeysha -Radhi Allaahu anha- went out with the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- to perform the farewell Hajj, and she had entered into Ihraam to perform Umrah, but when she reached a place close to Makkah, known as ‘Sarif’ the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- entered upon her and found her crying. So he said to her:

مالك أنفست

‘Why are you crying? Have you started your menstrual cycle?’

She replied: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.’

He –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

هذا أمر قد كتبه الله على بنات آدم، فاصنعي ما يصنع الحاج غير ألَّا تطوفي ولا تصلي

‘This is a matter which Allaah has written for the daughters of Adam, so do that which the person performing Hajj does, except do not perform the Tawaf and do not perform the Salat.’

So she did not perform the Tawaf or the Salat until she had become clean in Araafat, then she continued with the rites of Hajj and accomplished Hajj completely. When the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- had decided to travel and return to Madina, he entered upon ‘Aeysha in her tent and again he found her crying.

He asked her: ‘What is wrong with you?’

She said: ‘What is wrong with me? The people are returning with Hajj and Umrah, and I am returning with Hajj without Umrah.’

The reason was because her menstruation had caused her Umrah to be changed to a Hajj, a Hajj Mufrad (Hajj without Umrah), so here she is saying, she is crying out of grief of what she missed out from performing an Umrah before performing the Hajj, whereas her co-wives like Umm Salamah and other than her, returned with Umrah and Hajj, and that is why was crying.

She said: ‘Why should I not cry? The people are returning with a Hajj and Umrah and I am returning with a Hajj.’ So the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- had compassion on her and ordered her brother AbdurRahmaan bin Abi Bakr as-Siddiq to accompany her, with him on his camel and go out with her to at-Tan’eem. So he did that and she returned, and performed an Umrah and soothed her soul.

This is why we say, if a woman is afflicted with that which had afflicted ‘Aeysha from amongst the women, whereby her menstrual cycle started, while she wanted to perform Umrah, and she could not complete the Umrah, so that her Umrah was changed into a Hajj. So here a woman can perform Umrah in place of what she missed out on, in the same way that Allaah legislated upon the tongue of His Messenger for ‘Aeysha, so the woman who was menstruating goes out again to at-Tan’eem and comes and performs an Umrah.

As for men then, Alhamdulillah they do not menstruate so they do not take the ruling of the menstruating woman. The proof is, as some of the scholars of Seerah and history of the Companions, say: a hundred thousand Companions performed Hajj with the Messenger, not one of them did an Umrah the like of the Umrah of ‘Aeysha -Radhi Allaahu anha, so if that was something good then they would have proceeded us in that action. Therefore, the person who wants to perform an Umrah returns to the Meeqat and enters into Ihraam from there, whether for himself or for his mother and father.

This is sufficient and praise be to Allaah Lord of all the worlds.’

Dua’ for Increase in Knowledge – Compiled and translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

Dua ‘ for Increase in Knowledge

Compiled & translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

 1 – Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Assqalani (d.852 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘Regarding the statement: ‘The saying of Allaah Azza wa Jal:

وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدۡنِي عِلۡمٗا

‘Rabbi Zidni Ilma’

<<O my Lord increase me in knowledge>>

This is a clear proof of the Excellence of knowledge. This is because Allaah Ta’ala did not order the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- with request for increase in anything except for an increase in knowledge.’

[From: ‘Fath al-Bari’ 1/141]

2 – Umm Salma Radhi Allaahu anha said, the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to say in the supplication in the morning prayer:

اللهم إني أسألك علماً نافعاً، ورزقاً طيباً، وعملاً متقبلاً

‘Allaahumma innee assaluka ilman nafia, wa rizzqan tayyeebun, wa amalan mutaqabilan,.’

‘O Allaah indeed I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and a good Halal provision, and actions which are accepted.’

[Collected by Tayalisee, Tabraani & regarded Hasan by Hafidh Ibn Hajr]

3 – From Anas bin Malik – Radi Allaahu anhu – that he heard the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- supplicating:

اللهم انفعني بما علمتني وعلمني ما ينفعني وارزقني علما تنفعني به

Allahumman fa’nee bi-maa ‘allam-ta-nee wa ‘allim-nee maa yanfa’u-nee war zuq-nee ‘ilman yanfa’u-nee

‘O Allaah benefit me with what You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me, and grant me knowledge which will benefit me.’

[Collected by al-Hakim, Bayhaqi, Tabraani & authenticated by Albaani in Silsilah No. 3151]

4 – Allaah Ta’ala said:

رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةٗ وَفِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ حَسَنَةٗ وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

<< O our Lord give us good in this Dunyaa, and good in the Hereafter and save us from the punishment of the fire  >> [2:201]

Al-Hasan said: al-Hasana (good) in the Dunyaa is knowledge and worship, and in the Hereafter it is Paradise.’

Sufyan said: ‘al-Hasana (good) in the Dunyaa is knowledge and good provision, and in the Hereafter Paradise.’

[From: ‘Lattaif al-Ma’arif p.302]

5 – Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Jafar said: ‘I heard Ibn Khuzaimah while he was asked: ‘Where did you get this knowledge from?’

He answered: ‘The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

ماء زمزم لما شرب له

Zam Zam water is what it is drank for.’

So, when I would drink Zam Zam water I would ask Allaah for beneficial knowledge.’

[From: ‘Tadhkiratul Huffadh’ 2/721]

Al-Hakim said: ‘I drank Zam Zam water and I asked Allaah that he grant me the ability to compile works of books in a good way.’

[From: ‘Tadhkiratul Huffadh’ 3/1044]

Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajr said: ‘Once I drank Zam Zam, and I supplicated to Allaah, at that time I was at the beginning of studying Hadeeth, I asked Allaah to grant me the status of Dhahabi in memorising Hadeeth.  Twenty years later I went to perform Hajj, and I found in myself the ability to surpass that rank, so I asked Allaah for a higher rank than before, and I hope that Allaah grants me that rank.’

[From: ‘Juz hadeeth (Mau Zam Zam lema shuriba lahu)’ p.191 – 192]

6 – Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d.728 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘The reality of the issue is that a slave of Allaah is in dire need of asking someone for knowledge and guidance, seeking and asking, then he remembers Allaah and of his dire need of Allaah, then Allaah guides and shows him.  Just as Allaah said:

يا عبادي كلكم ضال إلا من هديته فاستهدوني أهدكم

‘O My worshippers! All of you are astray except the one whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I will guide you.’
[Collected by Muslim]

And just as the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to say:

Allaahumma Rabba Jibreela wa Mikaa’eela wa Israafeel, faatir al-samawaati wa’l-ard, ‘aalim al-ghaybi wa’l-shahaadah, anta tahkumu bayna ‘ibaadika fima kaanu fihi yukhtalifoon, ihdini lima’khtulifa fihi min al-haqq bi idhnika, innaka tahdi man tasha’ ila siraatin mustaqeem

‘O Allaah, Lord of Jibraeel, Mikael and Israfeel, You are the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the One who has all knowledge of the unseen and what is visible. You judge between Your worshippers in what they differ, guide me to the truth by Your permission in what they differ, indeed You are the One who guides whom You want to the straight path.’ [Collected by Muslim]
