The Fruit of the Belief that Allah is the All-Hearer and the All-Seer – Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen

“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer” (Ash-Shura 42:11)

The fruit of a person’s faith in this, is that it leads the servant to give Him the utmost reverence, because there is nothing like Him among the creatures. So, exalt this Magnificent Lord that does not have an equal; Or else there will not be any benefit here to your faith that; “There is nothing like unto Him”

When you believe that He is the All-Hearer, you Will soon be cautious regarding every statement that angers Allah, because you know that He hears you, and You fear His punishment. You will soon avoid every statement that involves disobedience of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, because you believe He is the All-Hearer. If this belief does not make this happen to you, know that your belief that Allah as the All-Hearer, is without a doubt, deficient.

If you truly believe that Allah is the All-Hearer, you would not say anything except that which pleases Him, particularly when you are talking about His Shari’ah, as in the case of a Mufti or a scholar. For this is indeed worse. Allah, Glorious is He, says:

(Then who does more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah, to lead mankind astray without knowledge. Certainly Alla’h guides not the people who are Zalimz’n (wrongdoers)) (Al-An’am 8:144)

Indeed this is among the worst forms of wrongdoing. That is why He said:

(Verity! Allah guides not the people who are Zalimin wrongdoers)) (Al-Ahqaf 46:10)

This among the punishments for the one who gives religious verdicts without knowledge; that he will not be guided, because he is a wrongdoer.

Be warned my brother Muslim, against saying anything that does not please Allah, whether you say that regarding Allah, or otherwise.

The fruit of the belief that Allah is the All-Seer, is that you will not do anything that angers Allah, because you know that whenever you are looking at something that is prohibited, while the people do not know it is an unlawful glance, Allah, the Exalted sees this glance, and He knows what is in your heart:

{Allah knows the fraud of the eyes, and all that the breasts conceal}(Ghafir 40:19)

When you believe in this, it is not possible that you ever do anything that does not please Him.

You should be shy before Allah, as you are shy before the nearest of the people to you, the most respected of them before you. Therefore, if we believe that Allah is the All-Seer, we will soon guard against every action that will lead to angering Allah; otherwise, our faith in that will be deficient.

If somebody points with his finger, his lip, his eye, or head, to something that is unlawful, while the people around him are unaware, Allah, the Exalted, sees him. Whoever believes in Him, then he should beware of this; If we believe in What is implicated by Allah’s Names Attributes, then we would have a complete state steadfastness (Istiqamah) among ourselves. And the One whose Help is sought.

Virtue Of The Prayer For Sending Rain (Salatul Istisqa) – Shaykh Ibn Baaz

From `Abdul-`Aziz ibn `Abdullah ibn Baz to any Muslim who reads this Fatwa. May Allah guide us all and grant us the means to make sincere repentance from all sins. Amen.

Peace, Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you.

To proceed:

:As you know, may Allah bestow His Mercy upon us all, that the ruler of Muslims, may Allah protect and guard him, gave directions for offering the Rain Prayer in the morning of Monday, 7 Jumadal-Ula, 1408 A.H., because rain season is late this year and has not fallen in many places at its annually scheduled time. Muslims are in dire need of it, and they are desperately asking Allah to overwhelm them with His Mercy [Exalted and Sublime Be He], His Bounty and Kindness. He (Exalted and Glorified be He) has guided them to invoke and implore Him so that He grants them their needs with His Grace.

He, the Most Glorified, assured them of answering their supplications, as He (Exalted and Glorified be He) said:

And your Lord said: “Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation). Verily! Those who scorn My worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness, (Islâmic Monotheism)] they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!“”

and:

And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.

In other verses, He (Exalted and Glorified be He) said:

Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. He likes not the aggressors.”

And do not do mischief on the earth, after it has been set in order, and invoke Him with fear and hope. Surely, Allâh’s Mercy is (ever) near to the good-doers” .

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the early Muslims always turned to Allah seeking His Help in times of distress or adversity. He answered their invocations and granted them of His Bounties and Benevolence as He (Exalted and Glorified be He) said regarding the Battle of Badr,

(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): “I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in succession.”” .

When drought intensified in Al-Madinah and its suburbs, Muslims requested the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to pray for rain. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then raised his hands while giving the Friday Sermon and prayed for rain and repeated his supplication twice.

On another occasion he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out with them to the desert where he led them in two Rak’ahs prayer similar to the ‘Eid prayer. He supplicated his Lord asking Him for rain. In this prayer he raised his hands and repeated the invocation many times and then inverted his garment.

Following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Muslims also raised their hands in prayer and supplicated Allah. Then Allah sent down abundant rain, bestowed His Mercy upon them and removed their distress.

He (Exalted and Glorified be He) said: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allâh (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the Meeting with) Allâh and the Last Day, and remembers Allâh much.”

One of the most important means of obtaining Allah’s Mercy and being blessed with rain is fearing Allah [Exalted and Sublime Be He], turning to Him in repentance from all sins, promoting all what is right and forbidding all what is evil, cooperating in matters of piety and righteousness, holding mutual consultation for the sake of Allah, advising each other with the truth and being steadfast in implementing it, being compassionate to the poor and the needy, consoling them and being generous to them.

Allah (Exalted and Glorified be He) said:

And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwâ (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth” till the end of the verse.

He,Most Glorified, said

And whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).

He also said,

…and whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him.”

He (Exalted and Glorified be He) also said in another verse:

Surely, Allâh’s Mercy is (ever) near to the doers of good

and:

The believers, men and women, are Auliyâ’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma‘rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islâm has forbidden); they perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give the Zakât, and obey Allâh and His Messenger. Allâh will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.“.

In these noble verses, He (Exalted and Glorified be He) explained that fearing Allah, being kind to Allah’s servants and keeping upright and straight on the path of Allah are of the means of bringing about Allah’s Mercy to His servants, His kindness to them, sending down rain and removing their distress.

Therefore, fear Allah O servants of Allah! Be kind to His servants, and advise one another with truth and be steadfast and patient in doing so; cooperate among yourselves in acts piety and righteousness, promote what is right, forbid what is evil and repent altogether from all your sins. Hence your Sustainer (Exalted and Glorified be He) will encompass you with His Mercy upon you and send down blessed rain for you. He will also give youwhatever you desire and withhold from you whatever you dislike.

The Almighty said: “And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advised us saying:

Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully”

In another Hadith he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated:

The Most Compassionate (Allah) has mercy on those who are compassionate to people. If you show mercy to those on the earth, He Who is in the heaven will show mercy to you” .

The Qur’anic verses and Prophetic Hadiths urging people to observe piety, uprightness, mercy and kindness to those in need are many and well-known.

I ask Allah to rectify the affairs of all Muslims; to grant them sincere repentance from all sins; to send down the rain for them out of His Grace and Bounty; to reconcile and unite their hearts on piety and good deeds; to protect everyone from the evils of their selves and to purify them from their sinful acts; to rid them of misguidance of tribulations; to support His Deen; to make His word the uppermost; to guide our rulers to what is good and beneficial forpeople and countries; to correct the behavior of their advisors and enable them to do all kinds of good. Indeed, He is the Grantor of all this and is the Most Omnipotent. Peace, Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you.

Understanding the Texts of Threats – Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen

فتاوى نور على الدرب :Original Title
Author: Muḥammad Ibn Ṣāliḥ al-‘Uthaymīn
Translated by: Abu az-Zubayr Harrison – authentic-translations.com

Question:

One of the Sudanese brothers living in the kingdom (of Saudi Arabia) in the city of Bāḥah asks: The people of the Sunnah and the mainstream community of Muslims state that the final destination of those who worship Allah with Tawḥīd – the Muslim monotheists – will eventually be Paradise. Yet there have come examples in some ḥadīth (prophetic narrations) that:

لا يَدْخُلُ الجَنَّةَ قَاطِعُ رَحْم

“Someone who breaks ties of kinship will not enter Paradise.”

And:

لا يَدْخُلُ الجَنَّةَ نَمَّامٌ

“A slanderer will not enter Paradise.”

So, will the Muslim monotheists who happen to fall into these two groups never enter Paradise as is apparent from these texts, or how do we understand them?

Answer by Shaykh al-Uthaymeen:

These texts pertaining to threats and others similar to them, whether from ḥadīth or verses of the Qur’aan, are what led the Khawārij and Mu’tazilah sects to state that anyone who commits a major sin will remain forever in the fire (of Hell). This is because they take these general texts and forget other general ones that conflict (and must be taken along) with these. And there are many proofs that state that Muslim monotheists or those with faith in their hearts even equal to a seed’s worth will not remain in the fire forever.

Likewise, the generality of the texts pertaining to hopes and promises that mention that believers will enter Paradise led the Murjiah sect to disregard the texts of threats. They said that any believer, even if he were a wicked sinner, would never enter the fire. So, these people take only these general texts and those others sects take only the general texts of threats.

However, Allah has guided the people of the Sunnah and the main community of Muslims to the middle, moderate belief that combines the understanding of both evidences in conjunction. This belief is that someone who commits a major sin does not thereby completely leave his faith. He may be deserving of punishment but Allah could simply forgive him and not put him into the fire, or perhaps someone else could pray for him and as a result Allah may not punish him. His punishment could also be expiated by other means. However, if no means are present whereby he can avoid punishment, then he may be punished in the fire according to the extent of his action, and after that he would be in Paradise. This is the methodology and understanding of the people of Sunnah and the community of mainstream Muslims.

Based on this understanding, the general ḥadīth of threats like those the questioner mentioned: “Someone who breaks ties of kinship will not enter Paradise,” and “A slanderer will not enter Paradise,” are understood to mean that such people will not enter Paradise by a perfect, absolute entrance without punishment. Rather, punishment may precede that (his entrance to Paradise) if nothing wipes out that sin like Allah’s forgiveness or something else. So the meaning is he will not enter Paradise absolutely and perfectly without some sort of punishment preceding that; by this meaning all the evidences are understood together (with no contradiction).

Question: Noble Shaykh, may Allah grant you success. We are a group of police officers and we would like to direct a question to you since we have been entrusted in this country with investigating those who wish to disturb the peace or oppose and reject obedience to the leader of affairs.

And we have heard of a religious verdict stating that it is impermissible to track these people down to pursue them and fight them because they are “Mujāhidūn” (people making religious Jihad), and because they want to expel the nonbelievers who fight Muslims in other countries such as Iraq. So, what is the correct opinion regarding this, may Allah grant you success.

Muslim and non-Muslim women exchanging visits – Shaykh Ibn Baaz

Q 6: I have some non-Muslim and Muslim neighbors about whom I have some reservations. What is the ruling on exchanging visits with them?

A: Visits exchanged in such circumstance are a good thing enjoined by Islam when they are for the purpose of guidance, advice, and cooperation in righteousness and piety.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says, ‘My Love is due to those who love one another for My Sake, who sit with one another for My Sake, who visit one another for My Sake, and who are generous to one another for My Sake.’” (Related by Imam Malik [may Allah be merciful to him] with a Sahih (authentic) Sanad (chain of narrators)][1]

Also, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There are seven whom Allah will shade with His Shade on the Day when there will be no shade but His Shade…” among them he (peace be upon him) mentioned: “Two men who love each other for the sake of Allah, meeting for that and parting upon that.” [2]

The example given is that of two men, but the ruling is general and applies to two men or two women. Thus, if a Muslim visits another Muslim or non-Muslim for the purpose of calling them to Allah, teaching them and guiding them to goodness without seeking worldly gain or taking the Commands of Allah lightly, this is a good act.

It is good for a Muslim woman to visit her sister in Islam and advise her to avoid Tabarruj (woman’s public display of her adornment or charms), unveiling the face or taking lightly what Allah prohibits. Similarly, it is good to visit her Christian or non-Christian female neighbor, such as a Buddhist woman or the like, to advise, teach, or instruct her. Actually, this comes under the heading of the Prophet’s words: “Religion is sincerity (well-wishing). Religion is sincerity. Religion is sincerity.“[3]  If she responds positively, all praise is to Allah; if she does not then you should give up the visits which do not serve any useful purpose.

Visiting for the purpose of gaining worldly benefits, playing, exchanging idle talks, eating or the like is not permissible to be made to non-Muslims, whether they are the Christians or others. Such visits may corrupt one’s religious commitment or morals, because the Kafirs (disbelievers) are enemies to us and we do not feel love towards them [as a reaction for their Shirk, disbelief, rejection of truth, enmity, sinning, transgression against Allah, etc. Ed]. Thus, we should not take them as protectors or confidants.

However, visits are required when they are made for the purpose of calling to Allah, urging to do goodness, and warning against evil. In Surah (Qur’anic chapter) Al-Mumtahinah, Allah (Glorified be He) says: “Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrâhîm (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: “Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allâh: we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you hostility and hatred for ever until you believe in Allâh Alone”” [Surah Al-Mumtahanah, 60: 4]

O Abu ‘Abdullah! Are you groaning?

There are also some Angels who write down the deeds of human beings.

“But verily, over you (are appointed Angels in charge of mankind) to watch you, honorable, writing down (your deeds), they know all that you do” (Al-Infitar 82:10-12)

“Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)” (Qaf 50: 18)

One of the companions of Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy upon him, visited him while he was sick. He found him groaning from the sickness. He said:

“O Abu ‘Abdullah! Are you groaning? Tawus said ‘Indeed, the Angels write down everything, even the groan of a sick person, because Allah says:

Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it(Qaf 50: 18)”‘

Therefore, Abu ‘Abdullah began to have (more) patience, and he stopped groaning,[1] because everything is written down. “Not a word does he (or she) utter? – Meaning any word uttered by you is written. However, you might be rewarded or punished for it. This is based on the saying that was said.

[1] For what was reported by Salih bin Al-Imam Ahmad, he said: “During his sickness prior to death, my father said: ‘Take out the book of ‘Abdullah bin Idris.’ then said: ‘Read to me the narration of Laith that Tawus used to dislike groaning during sickness.’ After that I did not hear to my father a groan till he died.” Siyar A’lam An-Nubula (11:215).

The Heaven Creaks And It Has Every Right To Creak – Sahih Hadith

Among them (Angels) are those who are in (constant) bowing and prostration to Allah in the heavens.

The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“The heaven Atat (creak) and it has every right to creak.”

And the Atit is the Sarir Ar-Rahl (camel’s creaking). Meaning: If there was a heavy load on top of the camel, you would hear to it a creaking sound due to the heavy weight of the load.

The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“The heaven creaks and it has every right to creak. There is no place that could contain four fingers in the heavens except that there is an Angel standing, bowing, or prostrating to Allah therein.” [1]

So these Angles cover the vastness of the heavens.

[1] Reported by Abmad (5:173), At-Tirmidhi (2312), Ibn Majah (4190) and Al-Hakim (2:510), from Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him. And his wording is: “The heaven creaks, and it has every right to creak. There is no space for four fingers, except that there is an Angel there, placing its head in prostration to Allah.” The Hadith is referenced by Al-Albani in As-Sahihah (1722).

Musical Ring Tones on Mobile Phones – Permanent Committee

Fatwa no. 20842

Q: Most mobiles have musical ring tones. Is it permissible to use these musical tones instead of the regular ring tone?  Could you kindly advise and direct us to what is beneficial for Muslims? May Allah reward you and protect you from harm!

A: It is not permissible to use musical tones on mobiles or other devices, because listening to musical instruments is prohibited as indicated by Shar‘y (Islamic legal) evidence. It is enough to use the regular ring tone.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

“Tell me the most astonishing thing your female Jinn has told you of” – Sahih Bukhari

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar:

I never heard ‘Umar saying about something that he thought it would be so-and-so, but he was quite right.

Once, while ‘Umar was sitting, a handsome man passed by him, ‘Umar said, “If I am not wrong, this person is still on his religion of the pre-lslamic period of ignorance or he was their foreteller. Call the man to me.” When the man was called to him, he told him of his thought. The man said, “I have never seen such a day on which a Muslim is faced with such an accusation.”

‘Umar said, “I am determined that you should tell me the truth.”

He said, “I was a foreteller in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance.

Then ‘Umar said, “Tell me the most astonishing thing your female Jinn has told you of.”

He said,

“One-day while I was in the market, she came to me scared and said, ‘Haven’t you seen the Jinns and their despair and they were overthrown after their defeat (and prevented from listening to the news of the heaven) so that they (stopped going to the sky and) kept following camel-riders (i.e. ‘Arabs)?”

‘Umar said, “He is right.” and added,

“One day while I was near their idols, there came a man with a calf and slaughtered it as a sacrifice (for the idols). An (unseen) creature shouted at him, and I have never heard harsher than his voice. He was crying, ‘O you bold evil-doer! A matter of success! An eloquent man is saying: None has the right to be worshipped except you (O Allah).’ On that the people fled, but I said, ‘I shall not go away till I know what is behind this.’ Then the cry came again: ‘O you bold evil-doer! A matter of success! An eloquent man is saying: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.’ I then went away and a few days later it was said, “A prophet has appeared.”

The difference between Ibadah (Worship) and Obedience – Imam Ibn Baaz

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

An extract from my letter I sent to His Excellency Shaykh Abu Al-A`la Al-Mawdudy concerning the difference between `Ibadah and obedience

On 2/4//1392 A.H., Abu Al-A`la Al-Mawdudy sent me a letter no. 1526, dated 2 Safar, 1392 A.H. explaining his case and Tufayl’s, his successor in the leadership of Islamic Group. I replied in the same year when I was the President of the Islamic University in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah and the following is some of my reply:

Some brothers from Milbar living in the country told me that Your Eminence opine that `Ibadah is clarified by obedience and that when someone obeys another, he worships him. `Ibadah is also interpreted as enslavement and idolization.

Furthermore, Shaykh `Umar ibn Ahmad Al-Millibary, owner of Al-Salsabil Magazine, wrote to me concerning this issue asserting what is mentioned about you and the Group. He sent me a copy of a survey pertaining to this question. You will find an enclosed copy of it.

This question appears strange for me so I determined to write to you before I receive your letter to know whether these statements which are attributed to you are true. So, please let me know your opinion. I see that obedience has a wider scope than `Ibadah. Every act of `Ibadah a person does in compliance with Allah’s Shari`ah is seen as obedience, but not every act of obedience to anything other than Allah (Exalted be He) is seen as `Ibadah. This matter needs more elaboration. Obedience to Allah (Exalted be He) is seen as `Ibadah when a person seeks to please Him. However, it may be valid or corrupt depending on whether the requirements of `Ibadah are met.

Please tell me in details your view on this question. It adds further explanation that `Ibadah may be denied when tainted with Shirkas Allah says concerning Mushrik (one who associates others with Allah in His Divinity or worship), “Nor will you worship that which I worship.” Surah Al-Kafirun, 109: 3 . Ibadah is negated because of their acts of Shirk. It is known that they worship Allah (Exalted be He) during times of hardships through showing Tawhid, performing Hajj and `Umrah, offering Sadaqah and so on.

Since these acts of `Ibadah are spoiled by Shirk, disbelief in the Hereafter and other kinds of disbelief during times of prosperity, it is permissible to negate the `Ibadah of people who show it. Furthermore, I would like to explain another point. The person who obeys the authorities or rulers in something forbidden by Allah (Exalted be He) is not seen worshipping them when he does not believe in the permissibility of obedience to anyone in something opposing Allah’s Shari`ah. They rather obey these rules out of fear of their evils or vain desires while they know that they are sinful. Due to their act of obedience, such persons are sinners, not Mushriks, unless they obey such rulers in matters which do not involve Shirk. Examples of these matters include striking, killing, and taking someone’s money unjustly. There are many other examples that come under this heading. I think this view is known by the people of knowledge whose status is below yours. I find it imperative to ask you about this and know your detailed opinion so that I can refute any claim against you and support you with sure knowledge and show the truth concerning the Islamic Group to any one who seeks it.

If what is attributed to you is true, we can discuss it thoroughly and examine the problematic issues using the evidence. The truth is the long-sought aim of everyone.

We ask Allah (Exalted be He) to grant us success to do what pleases Him and to comprehend His Religion and to adhere to it. May Allah purify our hearts and deeds and make the truth our long-sought aim wherever we are, for He is the Most Generous. As-salamu `alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah’s Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)

Happiness, Misery, and Signs of Their People-Ibn al Qayyim [PDF]

From the signs of happiness and joy is that whenever a worshipper increases in knowledge, his humbleness and mercy increases. Whenever he increases in acts of worship, his fear and caution increases. Whenever he increases in age, his greed decreases. Whenever he increases in wealth, his generosity and spending increases. And whenever he increases in status and position, his nearness to the people increases as does his fulfilling their needs and being humble with them.

And from the signs of misery is that whenever a worshipper increases in knowledge, his pride and arrogance increases. Whenever he increases in acts of worship, his bragging increases as does his belittling of people while always giving himself the benefit of the doubt. And whenever he increases in status and position, his arrogance and ego increases.

All of these things are trials from Allaah and a test by which He tests His servants, and because of them, some people attain happiness and others become miserable.

Similarly, some things people honor and admire are also trials like possessions, authority, and wealth. Allaah says about His prophet, Sulaymaan, when he saw the throne of Bilqees in front of
him:

“هَذَا مِنْ فَضْلِ رَبِّي لِيَبْلُوَنِي أَأَشْكُرُ أَمْ أَكْفُرُ “

This is from the favor of My Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. [Soorah An-Naml, 27:40]

So, blessings are tests from Allaah that make apparent the gratitude of the grateful, and the ingratitude of the ungrateful. In the same way, hardhips are also trials from Him سُبْحَانَه .He tests by way of blessings and hardships.

Allaah says:

“فَأَمَّا الإِنْسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ
رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ “

And as for man, when his Lord tests him and is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me!” But when He tests him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me!” [Soorah Al-Fajr, 89:15-16]

In other words, it’s not the case that everyone I increase with honor and blessings, that’s My way of honoring him. And everyone I tighten his sustenance and test him, it’s not necessarily that I’m humiliating him.

Story of Prophet Yusha Bin Nun (Joshua) – Riyadus Saliheen- Dr.Saleh As-Saleh [Audio|En]

The following is posted from Riyadus Saliheen Published by Dar-us-Salam

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said:

“One of the earlier Prophets who was out on an expedition proclaimed among his people that no man should follow him who had married a woman with whom he wished to cohabit but had not yet done so, or who had built houses on which he had not yet put the roofs, or who had bought sheep or pregnant she-camels and was expecting them to produce young. He, then, went on the expedition and approached the town at the time of the ‘Asr prayer or little before it. He then told the sun that both it and he were under command and prayed Allah to hold it back for them, so it was held back till Allah gave him victory. He collected the spoils and it (meaning fire) came to devour these, but did not. He said that among the people there was a man who stole from the booty. He told them that a man from every tribe must swear allegiance to him, and when a man’s hand stuck to his, he said: “There is thief among you and every individual of your tribe must swear allegiance to me”. (In course of swearing of allegiance,) hands of two or three persons stuck to his hand. He said: “The thief is among you”. They brought him a head of gold like a cow’s head and when he laid it down, the fire came and devoured the spoils. Spoils were not allowed to anyone before us, then Allah allowed spoils to us as He saw our weakness and incapacity and allowed them to us”.

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:

1. In the opinion of Imam As-Suyuti, the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) referred to in this Hadith was Prophet Yusha` bin Nun (Joshua). His conduct shows that it is necessary to make suitable arrangements for the worldly needs of those who are engaged in the Cause of Allah so that they can concentrate on their struggle without any distraction.

2. The lawfulness of the booty of war fought in the way of Allah is a specialty of the Muslim Ummah. Before the advent of Islam (the Shar’iah of Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam)), the booty of war which was free from dishonesty used to be consumed by fire. This Hadith also confirms the miracle of the Prophet Yusha’ (Joshua) in which the movement of the sun was stopped until he had conquered the village.
